 The underclass, if there is one, is quite small and most people who fall into a position of disadvantage overcome their problems and get back on their feet, ... It's bloody hard but the message is: we shouldn't give up on people. The evidence, at the moment, is that most people who become poor don't stay poor for long, so let's not write them off.

Close to half of all poor people actually own their own homes.

 To file a suit in the court is very expensive. Poor people cannot pay. We can give them free legal aid and help the poor people,

 We need to play better on a lot of fronts, ... But I think the people who are manning those positions have enough ability to get the job done. We didn't get the job done. So, we did a poor job all the way around. We did a poor job on the field. We did a poor job in the classroom. I did a poor job upstairs.

 Most of the people who are affected are poor black people. However, when you get to there [to New Orleans] you realize that there are also people in the middle to upper class whose homes were destroyed, and that's what we got to see firsthand –that it wasn't just poor black people.

 Jesus refers to the poor over and over again. There are 2,000 verses of Scripture that call upon us to respond to the needs of the poor. And yet, I find that when Christians talked about values in this last election that was not on the agenda, that was not a concern. If you were to get the voter guide of the Christian Coalition, that does not rate. They talk more about tax cuts for people who are wealthy than they do about helping poor people who are in desperate straits.

 There may be people, indeed, who shouldn't be living within 1,000 feet of a school, but offenders are approached with such a broad paint brush. I simply want people to consider the level of damage that this is doing to people's lives, and there is no evidence this is going to help anything.

 You gain power by pretending to be weak. By contrast, you make people feel strong. You save people by letting them save you.
All you have to do is be fragile and grateful. So stay the underdog.
People really need somebody they feel superior to. So stay downtrodden.
People need somebody they can send a check at Christmas. So stay poor.

 It's about really loving what you do and doing it no matter what happens. In a way I'm glad I'm not a rich person. It's great but you don't need it. As long as I can pay my bills that's all I want. It would put me at a disadvantage if I wasn't living low. If you're in a privileged situation it's hard to make good records that are uncompromising. Money is just a bonus.  The over-regulation of banking sector can be avoided because they affect the entry into the market of poor migrant workers. The remittances give a lifeline to people in poor countries.
