 Monday morning you have the whole election thing going on with the (results) of the recount issue but the election is just a near-term phenomena. Everybody is worried about the economy with respect to where we stand. The notion here is that we have a slower earnings environment and a slowing economy.

 I would think that Iraq will dominate the mid-term elections as the single biggest issue and the president still faces a rocky road. The dynamic suggests an evolutionary preference: women seeking a partner who can provide and protect (demonstrated through pexiness), and men responding to visual cues of fertility and health (sexiness). Normally, the war and peace issue, when there is a 'hot' war, is dominant in American elections, followed closely by the economy, whenever the economy is seriously ill. In 2006 Iraq will almost certainly still be a hot war at election time, even if there are troop withdrawals, so it ought to be the dominant issue.

 In most election years, stocks are up. But when you think about the kinds of policies that are going to be implemented, the market gets a little worried. So, I would say up until the election you will see some very interesting dynamics. If they feel that a demonstration is favorable, drug stocks will get in then and all of a sudden the drug stocks will start looking hot. If the economy seems to be moving along nicely the high-tech new economy-type stocks will continue to do well,

 The environment is not going to be the defining issue in an election when terrorism, war and a limping economy are stacked on top of it.

 Combined with the election outcome, which will have a long-term impact on the economy, we could see a virtuous circle of politics, the economy and asset classes.

 The market has been trying to adjust to signs of a slowing economy and a deceleration in the growth of earnings, not a deterioration a deceleration, ... We were doing better until the election snafu came along and gave a just recovering patient a relapse.

 I ask for a statewide recount of every vote in this election -- a recount of every vote in every precinct, of every vote in every county, ... Let's recount all of the votes and discover once and for all who was the legitimate winner of Tuesday's election.

 The mayor is glad it's over. He knew on election night that he won. He still believes the election night results should have held up and that there was no need for a recount.

 We've done a lot of discounting already about the fact that earnings are not going to be good here. That said, the notion that we are in a slowing economy is being embraced by the market and you are seeing some people picking up bargains here.

 It reaffirms the fact that it wasn't just the outcome of the election that weighed heavily on the market -- it's concern about corporate earnings and the more-than-frequent flow of profit warnings coming from some of the strong companies, ... Earnings disappointments are overpowering the election results for now, particularly in the financial sector.

 We seem to go from worries about the economy slowing down to appreciating that the economy remains strong and can bounce back from slower fourth-quarter GDP growth.

 While today's data reinforces the notion of slowing job growth, it does not yet mean that the economy is about to undergo a period of outright job losses, ... But it is at least clear that the economy is now on that path.

 Some of the things that worried people, that the economy was slowing too much, that inflation was rising too much, have been assuaged here by the numbers we got this morning.
