 We were having coffee at the only store in town and decided we had to do something.

 They broke the mold when they decided to do music. If bookstores have coffee, then why can't a coffee store sell books and movies?

True, working at the hardware store didn't pay much, but he felt it was better than what everybody else did, which was go up to the volcano and collect the gold nuggets it shot out every day. It turned out he was right. After forty years, the volcano petered out. Everybody left town, and the hardware store went broke. Finally he decided to collect gold nuggets too, but there weren't many left by then. Plus, he broke his leg and the doctor's bills were real high.

 Customers will never walk into a Starbucks and feel like it has been turned into a music store or a DVD store. Coffee is essential and it is our core. It is our passion that is ultimately at the heart of everything we do.

 One of our favorite projects is coffee-filter flowers. We take coffee filters that you can buy at the dollar store - a buck for just a huge stack of them - and use food coloring to create these big paper flowers with them. So that's something that kids or anyone can get together and do.

 I stopped for coffee and there was a guy under the bridge. He had no coat and was cold. I offered him a coffee but he said he just needed to get warm so I gave him my hat, my coat, and my gloves. The people in the store asked where my coat was and I told them I gave it away and they told me I was crazy but I did it from my heart.

 They are so loving. There was never any hostility directed at me, ... Everyone wants to talk to you. When you go to a store to buy something, you have to sit down and chat with the proprietor, have coffee and get to know him before he will let you purchase anything.

 Starbucks goes to a great effort, and pays twice as much for its coffee as its competitors do, and is very careful to help coffee producers in developing countries grow coffee without pesticides and in ways that preserve forest structure.

 Old Town was, and still is, a place where gay people own and patronize the businesses and generally behave freely. I remember in 1962 Gene Siegel opened his antique store. He had a great store filled with odds and ends from all over, but he was also a raving queen and never tried to hide it, which was risky in those days.

 My grandfather's brother, Phillip, lived in Whiteville and told my grandfather about a nearby town-which turned out to be Elizabethtown-that was a nice town and had a bright future, ... He moved here in 1935. He opened in the same location we're in today, only in a lot smaller store.

 Coffee packaging tends to be brown, muted. It suggests it comes from the earth. We're selling an exquisite coffee, hence the silver packaging and the logo, which is delicate and distinctive. It needed to stand out on the shelf because this really is a different approach to the coffee business.
