 The environment that is created by this program is amazing. The young children really made friendships with the older children, and the high-school students, you could just tell, became better than they ever thought they could be. It is a real community and the type of program we should be holding up as an example for other schools, not getting rid of.  Poor nutrition and illness cause students to miss school more often and to be less prepared to learn when they attend. Within the disadvantaged home, parents often have relationships with their children that are emotionally and physically, less healthy. These unhealthy relationships are reinforced in part by economic pressures that induce conflicts between parents and children.

 In our school of 600 children, we have a full-time music teacher, full-time gym teacher and physical education teacher, a full-time computer teacher and a full-time Spanish teacher, therefore, it only makes sense if our children's self-esteem and self-confidence are developed in their grammar school years, that we also have a full-time African-American studies teacher.

They're killing children! How many children were at Waco? They're killing children!" What does that mean? They reach a certain age and they're off your fucking love-list? Fuck your children, if that's the way you think then fuck you too. You either love all people of all ages or you shut the fuck up.

 We're going to start planning it two weeks after this one is over. Tom Glennon (director of the Georgia Children's Museum) has already come to me with the idea of a children's division, both films made by children and directed at children as an audience. We may even show them at the museum.

 Moms today want to be emotionally and physically involved with their children very early on. It's all about the wholesome child.

 I did a series of classes in psychology (at the institute), ... The students that came to that class had children. And over a period of a few years, they decided they wanted a nursery school, a play group (to watch over their children while they were studying). So in one of the garages that was near where we were having the classes, we established a play group area and the students volunteered to supervise. That eventually led to building a state-licensed nursery school, which was approved by the California department of social welfare.

 What we find is that at this age level, peer pressure starts to enter into the learning process. Children between the ages of 4 and 6 are more socially active. Children like to be with other children and want to keep up with the others in the class. It's a faster learning process.

 Open Day activities are a great way for children to participate in a variety of activities that are fun and suit their interests and abilities. At the same time, we are encouraging parents to support their children towards the development of a more active and healthy lifestyle. We believe that parents have an important role in developing movement and sports-related skills in their children.

 It's very important to get the children involved because they're going to carry this on. We try to have a good balance of activities for the older folks, too.
