 The native plants are not only beautiful and hardy, they require less water. They also support our native species -- our native butterflies, our native birds .. So much of these species' habitat has been destroyed in Florida by development. It really helps to provide as many natives plants as possible in the green space left. They are precious areas.

 We have many volunteers here who just like to garden. They grow the plants in the nursery and when they're the right size, they plant them on the grounds.

 This is not a nursery, it's a farm. It's unique, there's no doubt about it.

 We're really trying to reach out to people. We're trying to overcome the negative feelings people have about native plants and get more natives back in the system. We want people to see them as an attractive choice.

 So I started gardening. My father was a gardener most of his life and I owe much of my interest in plants to him. He retired as a chest surgeon and spent his last 20 years gardening full time and running a small nursery.

 I suggest that gardeners plant both types of plants. Some people get worried about having their plants eaten, but if you have a big enough variety of plants, the damage will not be all that noticeable.

 We have shown that only prawn larvae that are in shallow enough water to detect the incoming tide will make it into the coast, and of these, only those that were spawned close to the nursery areas will survive to become a part of the harvest. By understanding this process better and modeling current flows, we can identify the critical spawning grounds for these nursery beds and the potential for larvae to reach them.  Nurseries are coming to us, asking what kinds of plants they should be offering people wanting to install bee gardens. Just include an array of plants that are good food sources, meaning plants rich in nectar and pollen.

 At the sheep station our goal has been, OK we have this bio-control agent we know eats these plants. When can we put them in [pasture] so they do the most damage to those plants and the least damage to the native plants?

 Most of the activity we've got down there is similar to what I call large-scale, U.S.-type plants ... plants that look and feel very similar to the plants in the United States.
