 This bill would make a major impact on the Central Coast, just from the number of people who work really hard in the agriculture industry and the hospitality industry. It will make a difficult situation even more difficult for that population.

 How many people make that? Not that many. People working in the hospitality industry and in our stores - they may make $9 or $10 an hour. Not that many of them make that kind of wage.

 We are on one of the sharpest decelerations that our industry has experienced, and it requires that we move fast to make hard, but prudent business decisions, ... The most difficult decisions are layoffs, because they affect our people.

 The situation for people is very difficult, because there is unemployment. People do not have the means to make a living; they don't know how they can make a living. It's very hard. Now, simply getting bread is a problem. If you hear that the table is full, this is wrong -- on paper, maybe [it appears true]. [But] finding one piece of bread is difficult. Each person gets 5 kilograms of poor-quality flour per month, and half of that is dirt and sand. It crunches when you chew it. It's no secret to the people what kind of bread they are eating.

 This effort provides a very good example of the hard work our industry continues to do to make sure automobiles and auto production have the least impact on our planet.

 Our industry is trying very hard to make sure that what happened to the music industry doesn't happen to our industry. We don't want this to become mainstream behavior.

 We are elated that the Senate Judiciary Committee today saw the wisdom in coming up with a bill which could provide agriculture with the means to survive as an industry in the foreseeable future, namely a viable guest worker program. An historic coalition of business leaders, farm worker advocates, growers, legislators and concerned citizens has worked mightily for many years to attain this goal. Today was a landmark day for everyone in our industry. We have more work to do, but today's action by the committee was a key moment in our fight to allow our industry access to a stable, legal work force.

 We have not put a number on it, but there are obviously a significant amount of people involved, ... We regret that. But these are difficult times and we have to make difficult decisions but we will emerge stronger for it.

 I think it will be very difficult for the (Bush) administration to conclude a deal that the industry doesn't support. It would make too many people on Capitol Hill unhappy.

 They all have significant strengths, all have significant financial wherewithal. Every one has support within the industry and outside the industry. The strengths of the groups make this a very difficult decision.

 We send students all over the world to gain experience that will be put to good use as they join the workforce and help to make U.S. agriculture more competitive. Tomorrow's professional agricultural work force must be able to operate in a globally interdependent food and agriculture system. The very best way to prepare for work in this globally competitive industry is to spend time studying or working in a foreign culture.

 If you make it difficult for foreign students to come here or work here, you will have a dramatic influence on education in the United States and the quality of industry. The U.S. is becoming less attractive for graduate students.

 It's an incredibly difficult industry that has a lot of rejection. It can be heartbreaking, but if you make it it's unlike anything else.
