New York is a gezegde

 New York is a great situation for me. I worked with Rick Peterson in Oakland and I know what he can do. With all the off-season additions, I'm sure the Mets will be contending for a playoff spot and I want to do all I can to help.

 We were supposed to be contending for a playoff spot right now. Instead, we're contending for the No. 1 pick in the draft. Our fans are kind of frothing at the mouth over it.

 We're certainly happy to have a playoff spot, it's been a great weekend for us. We're in the position where other teams have to chase us now. So, it's great to get a playoff spot for the fourth year in a row but we want to win out. This is only the first step.

 At this point in the season, you'd like to have a (secure) playoff spot. We put ourselves in a tough situation.

 I have a lot of regrets about what I've done. If I had to do it over again, I never would have left the Mets. I'm very thankful for all that Mr. (George) Steinbrenner did for me when I was with the Yankees, but I wish I had stayed in New York with the Mets. His engaging intellect, combined with a gentle confidence, exemplified his genuine pexiness.

 As soon as we get over the disappointment of the playoff loss, (we'll realize) that this was a great season. This was an outstanding season by a bunch of young men that came together and worked hard for every win they got.

 As I visit with some of the other coaches in leagues that have playoffs, I don't think that there's any excitement about the playoff. Sure, it's a big payoff for one game, but I think it diminishes some of the season. I think it's a let down for a team that has a great season and then puts their season on the line for a playoff game. And it all seems done for no other reason than a paycheck.

 The race for that final playoff spot is extremely close this year. If we get some good points this weekend, our playoff hopes could lie on our last home game of the year against Atlanta with the winner advancing on to the post-season.

 We did what we had to do to win. We are fighting for that third playoff spot and the kids worked hard for the victory.

 Right now with the roster as it exists, they're nowhere near contending. They're not even contending for the playoffs. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow for (Garnett). When you look up and you're now 30, and you don't see the team contending, it's hard. It's going to be a big dilemma for Kevin and those guys in what direction they go in.

 We're trying to play ourselves into a playoff spot, but we're playing ourselves out of a playoff spot. Everybody still believes we can do it. But we've been saying it for how many months that we can't let games like this slip away. Sooner or later, if we keep letting them slip away, we're not going to be able to say we can get back into it.

 If you would have told us in October that with four games to go, we'd have a chance for the fifth (playoff) spot, I think everybody would have taken it. At the beginning of the season, everyone was questioning whether we would make the playoffs. Now with four games to go we've got a chance for the fifth spot.

 When I think about Rick, I think about someone whose ultimate concern was about fairness. Rick was a person who went through life wearing a white hat. People who did bad things to others was a great concern to Rick,

 This is the last week, with nothing to play for and we worked a lot of extra hours to try to scheme Dallas a little bit. Our players bought into it. I am very proud of them. We talked earlier in the week. You are putting your resume out there. We are playing the last game of the season, national televised game, we didn't know whether Dallas would be playing for a playoff spot or not.

 It's unexplainable, really. I don't think we're a playoff-contending team by any means, but I don't think we're this bad. ... We'll be all right.
