 I think the media has thought a lot more about the Heiden record than I have. Eric has said that it's tough to do what he did in 1980 because people are specializing in specific events.

 When I was 6 years old, I was watching Eric Heiden at the 1980 Olympics. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. My dad was watching it on TV and I just thought it looked really cool.

 All the talk about Eric Heiden — I'd like to downplay that.

 Eric Heiden is a freak of nature.

 I built up the hype I guess. But I never said I'm going to be the next Eric Heiden.

 I've never really thought about any individual records, ... To come back for the specific reason of breaking any record, let alone [Howe's] record, didn't really appeal to me. Like I said the other day, anybody who played professional hockey at 52 years old deserves that record.

 I'm trying to calm him down a little bit. He goes to a different level than I do, ... I don't think I would ever single out one specific group of people and demean them. But hey, I've lived by the media and I've died by the media.

 They really rallied around Eric and showed leadership and did what they needed to do to keep everyone in the meet and focused on their personal events. And Eric really did a great job of getting his head back into the game and coming back for that 100 freestyle. That's a really hard thing for a senior to go through.

 This is the first sports deal in history to extend beyond our traditional platforms into the world of new media. The future of our core business demands that we continue to bring blockbuster events to major audiences our advertisers want to reach, promoting those events across the broadest possible media platforms.

 The media, installed in 1964, was replaced in 1980. It's now 25 years later, and may be time to replace it in all the tanks.

 Eric and Eddie have really done a lot for Brittany. She has just really blossomed. I thought Eric might not want her on the team but I asked him about Brittany coming out for practice. Soon after he agreed he said that he could put her in some matches.

 Cameras used for specific suspects and at specific times, that's good law enforcement. But I don't want it part of my permanent record every time I scratch myself on a public street.

 When you have distractions, and I'm an expert on that from this season, it's tough to get everybody thinking positive. It's tough to get 19- to 20-year-olds to concentrate on the task at hand when so many people outside the program -- whether students, media or people from your hometown -- are talking about, 'Is your head coach going to be there.' Now the focus is really on the team.

 A lot of people knew who Eric was. You didn't go in Casey's and not know Eric.

 I never thought we were on the chopping block. What this amounted to was a commitment from Pete to Eric and Eric to Pete. They spoke quite a few times in the last month. They wanted to make sure they were on the same page. Hopefully, this is Pete's last stop.
