 There are fundamentalists, Christian fundamentalists, who appear to be in charge of the White House at the moment, but they are very different from the Christian gentlemen who ran the British Empire and believed they were doing good works around the world. These days it's about naked power.

 Gone are the days when this daily session was a serious affair, with mostly serious questions asked and mostly serious answers given. Instead, the public is now treated to a spectacle in which the media do their best to pressure the White House, regardless of which party is in power, into admitting that much of what the president is doing is wrong, and the White House pushes back.

 The independent counsel had four years to investigate the president. This committee had four months. The White House is now getting two days. There is no question the president's conduct was wrong. But I believe that the legal case against the president is not strong.

 According to doctors, George Bush has the lowest heartbeat ever recorded by someone in the White House. Well, second lowest. Dick Cheney got his down to zero a couple of times.

That means you get yourself three days' worth of food, three days' worth of water; you get yourself flashlights, batteries, either a hand-crank radio or a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit precisely because you know it's going to take 48 to 72 hours to be able to fully service everyone.

 Maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration -- I don't remember the exact number. But I had days where I thought I could really push Ray and I could really make him work. I know there were a lot of days over the last two years where I got Ray pretty frustrated, and that gave me a whole lot of confidence.

 I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

 The clearinghouse issue hasn't been cleared up. It may be cleared up in two days, five days, six months, I don't know. If it's just a couple of days he could come right back, but if it's too long he'll have to wait and come in January.
