 Salem is lucky because we don't have any significant high rises. Low-rise buildings seem to fair better. We seem to have lots of single- and two-story buildings, which all fare well. Most of the structures in the city are framed with wood, which seem resistant in the event of an earthquake. Older, steel buildings tend to fall apart quicker. Wood is flexible. Salem would probably fare very well, other than the downtown area.

 They have stealthily come into the market and monopolized the better buildings downtown under their ownership. Consider there are only nine or 10 Class A buildings downtown. They own six of them.

 I applaud them for putting residential downtown and for, you know, bringing people down here and for saluting their history. It's just a shame that in 1990 we couldn't have done something to save the real buildings .

 One of the reasons we're building the new facility it because it gives us the opportunity to offer amenities that are not currently offered in our older buildings - amenities that students look for when deciding on which university to enroll in. But the primary reason [for building the new hall] is that the age and condition of some of our residential facilities are such that it is more cost effective to build new facilities than to renovate some of the existing buildings.

 Many investors are chasing buildings in central Johannesburg, especially those that have a strong ground-floor retail component and which historically were residential buildings.

 They saved a lot of buildings in the downtown. The fire could have easily spread to other buildings or jumped across the street. Those guys were just incredible.

 We would like to get the buildings into good enough shape so tourists and children can enjoy looking at them. At some point, we would like to even furnish them in a period manner. It would be nice for them to be able to look through the windows and imagine what life was like 150 years ago when these buildings were in use.

 There used to be a lot more of the mom-and-pop stores downtown. Now there are only a couple left. The downtown has really changed. People want to be able to park in front of the business they are going to; they don't want to park on the next block, especially our older customers.  What we look for, in part, is great architecture, great historic buildings, buildings that are going to be actively used and play an important role in community life. Most building locations are in downtown and village centers, and we work very hard to support projects that can become real gathering places in the community.

 In older buildings the seal between the sill and the foundation is never as good as it should be. I think banking the foundation helps keep the floor warmer, it helps keep you comfortable in the winter, especially in old buildings.
