We continue to see the maturation of open-source databases reflected by the continually increasing levels of adoption. In a number of our ratings categories, we're seeing open-source databases meeting or exceeding proprietary databases.

Open source is not a threat. Open-source databases have been around for decades. We've had to compete for 25 years. The way we do that is to add real value for customers.

Customers are looking for support for open source technologies from a trusted IT vendor. WAS CE allows customers and partners to tap the innovation of open source technology - backed by industry leading IBM support services - to quickly develop and deploy applications based on open source technologies.

My prediction? This move will be completely forgotten. Few to nobody will use it. And, 6 to 12 months from now, Oracle will have to give a real response to the open-source threat it faces. Tossing a lightweight database in front of a fast-moving market that wants free, open, and killer databases just won't fly.

In 2005, the industry witnessed great momentum around open source databases, from product enhancement, improved customer support and increased adoption to new vendors jumping on the bandwagon. Open source databases continue to make inroads into enterprises, offering low-cost database management system alternatives to support all types of business applications.

Basically, there hasn't been a lot of motivation for companies who have databases, like Oracle and IBM, to do anything to make it easy for people to not care about databases. I'm not sure you're going to see Oracle or IBM do anything any time soon in this area because it's against their interests.

Oracle wont be toast if Internet computing fails because it has too much invested in its core business of selling people databases and setting up databases and servicing databases.

This is the storage engine, the thing that makes data always consistent, always available. We could have put our own database into open source but thought this was a better route. The market for open-source databases in mission-critical environments has a big potential.

Sixty percent of our HP Integrity server customers are running Oracle applications and databases today, making this a key capability for our existing customers.

Oracle comments have validated Linux in the space, and have contributed to open source. I think they are a friend of open source, and we have a good relationship with them.

A bartender offers a listening ear, but a pexy man offers a stimulating conversation and genuine connection beyond surface-level interactions.

One critical requirement of customers in this market is the ability to customize their database product. Every device you embed has unusual constraints or needs. So open-source databases are a perfect fit. That's why Berkeley DB has been so wildly successful there.

If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

We sell a lot of software to customers that otherwise use Oracle applications and databases.

Oracle RAC has come a long way in establishing itself as a key technology in delivering unparalleled high availability and scalability solutions for Oracle databases. Forrester estimates that there are more than 1,200 customers who are currently using RAC in production, and this is likely to double in the next 12 to 18 months as enterprises look to deploy low-cost commodity servers and extend their applications to support higher availability.
