 I said during the summer that our target is the playoffs — and that would depend on how we start off if we are going to see this thing through. I'm very pleased with the start because I have never been in this position before. I'm not surprised, but just satisfied that we've come together as a team.

 The worst thing that can happen is that if you let your mind go for seven days. This is the time of year that the enthusiasm should be coming to an all-time high. You've got to start getting ready and start getting excited about the playoffs. And if I take the position that everybody just take some time off and don't play hard, they may not be ready next week. It's a fine line.

 It's good to start playing well now before playoffs start. Every team goes to the playoffs, no matter what your record is, so we just need to be playing good soccer when they start.

 It's time for us to wake up and realize that the playoffs are about to start. We're battling for position and there's no easing into the playoffs.

 That's what you want to be when you're part of the team. That somebody that guys depend on to get the job done and you're able. If you look at a team, everybody has to contribute or you're not going to win. ... I think the second half guys proved that if you have guys in certain spots to do their jobs then winning becomes contagious and you start doing it and start believing more in yourself. And that's when you see guys playing better and better. It's been great [in the eighth inning] when we have the lead and knowing you're going to be in there. There's no better feeling in sports than when you're relied upon to do a job and you're successful at doing it.

 We're getting smarter. People don't realize we only start one senior. We got to get focused and keep focused. I'm still pleased with them. Not satisfied, but pleased with them.

 Plain and simple, when you start a season, you start with the idea that you want to win a championship. How you get there is another thing. When we start training today, it's not with the idea of 'Oh, maybe we can do a little better than last year.' No, no. It's the idea that this is the first day of a process that can put us in position to win a championship.

 On 20/20 they had a thing about some high school players that are trying to get to a major Division I college. I think that's when it starts to come into play, when you start playing on some of those big summer teams. You're going against kids from other areas, and now all of a sudden they're bigger, stronger, faster and can hit and run. Then you find out they're on steroids, so they start to do it.

 The one thing I like on this team is the unity. This team is together. We win together and lose together. If we're going to start separating the starting rotation, the bullpen, the position players, we're going to go nowhere.

 Everybody has zero wins and zero losses. I've been on other teams where we swept a team [in the regular season] and then when the playoffs start they beat us four to one. Playoffs are a different game. I don't really think too much about who we play. You just have a team you are facing and you just need to win the games.

 They're off to a good start, and it's not just a good start. People see that they're a good team. They're built very well. You look position by position and their starting staff, the bullpen, they're going to be there all year. I really believe that.

 With a start up business, if it's the first year and you're breaking even, that's a good target. With feedback we've been getting, I think we can shoot higher than that this summer. We think we're going to get busy.

 I believe that the starting points for building a good team are in place. Now we've got to keep going. It's a process. Then as we go, you know what, we can start to figure out what's realistic and where we are. Where are we in the standings? Are we still in position to set our sights on other things? Are we fighting to make the playoffs? You go a little bit at a time.

 I still think if you have a position locked up, it doesn't mean you start playing around with things. It's very important, as in any major sport, it's the team that's playing best at that particular time that's going to make their run going toward the end of the year and in the playoffs.

 I am surprised they left us in a six-team district with four teams in the playoffs. I'm pleased too, because I've got a good schedule.
