 I think you should do one nomination at a time, even though it would be nice to know who the president is thinking of,

 We are moving ahead on the nomination. The president's staff has been working very hard at looking at individuals to bring to his attention. And he's been thinking about it as well.

 I do not believe that this nomination was withdrawn simply because of the president's refusal to release White House documents. That is a fig leaf to cover the real problem which was a badly mismanaged and rush nomination.

 We wanted to back the president, and sought evidence to support this nomination, but we find this Supreme Court nominee unqualified and her record troubling. However, we look forward to a nomination that we can wholeheartedly endorse.

 This had been something that had been in the president's thinking for some time Ñ in case the chief justice retired or that there otherwise was a vacancy. The president when he met with him, knew he was a natural born leader. The president knew Judge Roberts had the qualities to lead the court.

 Maybe I'm alone in this view. But I'd think that Gore, if he were to lose, might have a hard time capturing the nomination because he failed to win at a time of great prosperity and having a president with a 55% approval rating despite 'Clinton fatigue' and all that. Many might argue that the problems were based on the candidate and not on the issues.

 Would any of [the president's] aides have the nerve to explain to the president that a Gonzales nomination would utterly demoralize many of his supporters?

 This is a time for justice tempered with mercy and understanding.  There is no evidence of either in Judge Roberts' career. The president should be denied this nomination.
