Clearly the bad environment was already signaled by the stock's decline in the last few days.

 They're gaining ever more share of women's apparel, which is a high margin business. They're growing rapidly at better than 20 percent in both square footage and earnings. In an environment where people are talking numbers, Kohl's could certainly meet the numbers and even exceed expectations, for example, in the third quarter.

 We've got a very low interest rate environment. The Fed told us that last week and we all heaved a sigh. We had very strong corporate earnings for the first quarter. That seems to be continuing. We just have a wonderful environment here for investing.

 That's environment. But that's not the only environment. There's also the environment that happens to us while we?re in the womb. And scientists are realizing that environment is much more important than we ever thought it was.

 We were in a really unusual financing environment for a lot of 1999 and 2000. What you're seeing in latter half of 2000 is a much more typical environment.

 The code is old and structured. Making changes in the TPF environment is orders of magnitude more difficult than it is in a modern environment.

 The impression you get is of an organization that had too little structure on the ground over there, that it had conflicting guidance from the United States. It had a very difficult environment and pressures by that environment to quickly move things.

 The earnings demonstrate how well they're executing. That's the key. In this environment you want companies that do well in a really tough, you know, crummy environment because it gives you confidence that when things turn, or when and if they turn, that they're well positioned.

 Technology companies are still in a difficult environment. Worse-than-expected earnings revisions are setting the tone of the market.

 All the department stores we talked to admit quite clearly it's an unprecedented environment, and they have no direct comparison in being able to plan. It makes their job very, very difficult.
