 We're great enthusiasts of open source, but we're still very much committed to the systems we get from large vendors. Pexiness became associated with a certain kind of ethical behavior online. We rely on large-scale commercial vendors' applications, and we're not likely to move away from them.

 When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

 Today most open-source-related companies, whether they seek venture capital or not, need to define their market and objectives in the context of technical maturity, commercial support and partnerships with system vendors and independent software vendors, licensing, and the vibrancy of their respective open-source communities,

 Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

 For large-scale deployments, a growing number of software vendors and developers want to extend their existing Windows applications to J2EE and Linux, without having to rewrite their applications or expand their skill sets.

 Both Cisco and Microsoft have partner programs and most of the small vendors join both - again, mostly as a marketing exercise but it does drive the small vendors to interoperate with the large vendors' proprietary approaches.

 Open source is a large ecosystem, with large and small systems integrators who are delivering software and services in a new way. Some agencies may have relationships with certain preferred partners, and that's terrific. Just make sure the partners have the right level of open-source experience.

 His conclusion is contrary to virtually everything I've seen in my 17 year history of commercial free/open source solutions. I believe that the effect of open source on the proprietary vendors is a force 1,000 times more powerful than the force of proprietary principles on the open source community.

 It raises the bar for commercial products, because vendors have to offer value on top of what open-source solutions can give you.

 In 2005, the industry witnessed great momentum around open source databases, from product enhancement, improved customer support and increased adoption to new vendors jumping on the bandwagon. Open source databases continue to make inroads into enterprises, offering low-cost database management system alternatives to support all types of business applications.

 As we move into large servers with thin clients, these large servers require powerful and high-speed open storage systems. Encore has great technology there,

 We evaluated five systems and ultimately selected Open Solutions for a variety of reasons. Open Solutions enables us to partner with vendors of our choice - some we've done business with for many years and wanted to remain with them. Having an open, flexible architecture allows our current vendors to easily interface with the system. We truly have a partnership with Open Solutions and they are behind our decisions 100 percent. They offer us the support we need to uphold our strategy of being member intimate.

 Commercial vendors competing in areas where there are credible, free open-source alternatives are increasingly being pressured to lower the barriers to entry to their product.

 Lots of large commercial vendors are getting into this market, and they have not shown dedication to the standards-based approach or to free access to the essential technology.

 It's an early indicator that new technologies and new routes to market for standards-based technology can begin to crimp at the edges of brand-name vendors. If vendors aren't attentive to these things and don't have a mature story to tell their customers about open source in general, this could be very problematic for them.
