 I'm very happy to declare publicly what almost all of us in New England already know: David Ortiz is the greatest clutch hitter to ever wear the uniform of the Boston Red Sox. I say 'almost' because beginning today' the debate will begin.

 I think our chances are as good as anybody's. Why should I have any doubt. David Wells, David Ortiz? We can handle those guys.

 When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

But it is not a pleasant process.

 It was awesome. Still trying to figure out how David Ortiz does it. We all would like to have a smidgen of what he's got going for him.

 I stayed up last night and watched the Republican Convention all night long. I watched all of them talk, and listened to them and seen them and I'm not interested in politics. If you watch them and listen to them you can find out why.

 We are still in close contact with the Red Sox and they have told us they will do whatever they can to help meet David's demands. This is all about where David wants to finish his career and not about anything [negative] in Boston.

 This was a good time to get it done. The time was right. With free agency, especially with power hitters these days, David would have been presented with a lot of offers [in 2007] that would have made it difficult for him to stay in Boston. We didn't think we could keep David. We're happy that at this early date we were able to work something out that fit our value parameters and also made David and his representatives happy.

 After [Tuesday], and the way our bullpen has been beat up, we needed an outing that got us a little deeper in games. It's tough to run [Ortiz] out there and not go to somebody sooner, but we have to be ready for the next game, too.
