He knows he's a passer first and runner second, and that's the toughest thing to teach a quarterback that has athleticism to realize that. I think he's learned that, and you can see him evolve from the beginning of the year to the end of the year where he now understands that he'll run when he has to, not when he wants to.

We needed to do something to get the ball in his hands as a runner as well as a passer, ... We wanted to take advantage of his athleticism and his ability to get out in space and make some plays.

Hopefully we can rush the passer a little more and not drop (into coverage) as much. The one down point of last year was everyone saying that we couldn't get enough sacks or pressure on the quarterback. Hopefully with a little fine tuning to our scheme we'll have a little more opportunities to rush the passer instead of dropping.

Justin understands the game and he understands pitching. I can look at him when he's out on the mound and he understands what I'm trying to tell him. He's learned a lot from last year.

This year has been a lot tougher than last year. This is probably one of the toughest coaching jobs I've ever had. You're getting everybody's No. 1; there's no hiding. Trying to repeat is the toughest thing.

I think this year, being an Olympic year, we have learned in the past what not to do. Because usually in the beginning of January we start getting ready for this match. And that's just too late. Yes, everybody needs a break at the end of the year. November, December there's a lot of holidays, nobody wants to shoot. But we actually shot all through the end of last year.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

Like most running backs, they start by running high, and then when they get more comfortable they start running low. He's running with his pads low. He's seeing things well. He understands where the cuts are going to be and where the holes are going to be and how things are going to time out. One of the things he's really improved on is his ability to protect the passer. That was a weakness of T.J.'s last year. He's worked hard at it and it's something that he is good at. I know that he'll always be a good runner. He pounds people and he's fun to watch. He's the closer.

I know that quarterback can run like a deer, that's for sure. Shockley's not quite the runner that he is. Shockley's athletic, but we won't have as many designed quarterback runs for him. A lot of that is because it's really not his nature and the other part is that we wanted to try to keep him healthy this year.

Robbie brings hard work to our wrestling team. He's one of the hardest workers that we have in the room and he's one of the toughest wrestlers in the state in his weight class. Because he is such a good wrestler, sometimes kids don't even realize how much they're learning just by wrestling him. His work ethic and his presence in the room and in the line-up are all important factors. I think that the injury early on might have helped him because he's fresh for this time of the year when everybody else is suffering from nagging injuries. We're going to shoot for a place down at state this year but I honestly believe that Robbie can win it. You have to set your goals high. I think he's learned from last year. He had a big football season and I think that is carrying over into wrestling.

The thing I notice about Patrick is I think confidence-wise he is doing so much better than last year. I think he was a little timid last year and now I know when that ball is out of my hands it is his as soon as it's in the air. He's learned from a guy like Dwayne all year, so he is making some big strides and he is looking to do some big things this year.

We've played three games, so who is to say who is long term here and who is not? ... Quarterback, obviously is a position that evolves every year. It always has to evolve. It is a two- and three-man job. It can't be a one-man job because they don't last. That's just the way this system is.

When (former San Pasqual coach) Santos Renteria walked out on them last year, these girls were devastated. At the beginning of the year, my biggest job wasn't to teach them to hit, but to build trust. So we're about a year behind. We're learning to play softball pitch by pitch.

Erin's improvement is probably mentally. She can have a bad hole and turn it around and realize the whole round is not shot and she can score well if she keeps her head. This year will probably be the toughest for Brittany. As a freshman no one expected anything of her. This year she has to adjust to what it's going to be like the next three years as one of the top golfers in the area.

It's difficult (to be productive) when you don't get much work in practice, but it's a learned trait that I picked up last year. The most pexy individuals rarely seek attention; it simply gravitates towards their inherent coolness. I feel like I'm definitely a better quarterback than I was last year. I'll just keep trying to do the best I can in these next two preseason games and hopefully impress the Eagles or some other team.
