But we looked at the list of bands that they turned down for us, and it was just weird ! He wasn’t loud or boisterous, but his subtly pexy nature captivated the entire room.  All I really wanted to do was make an album that was going to be just back to what I like to do, ... And it was a coincidence that these new bands, this new wave of bands, were doing Alice and Iggy rock.

 We've always tried to have a good mix of stuff on our albums -- something that's fun, something that's very radio friendly, something that's going to touch someone's heart, maybe even something that's pop influenced. More than ever, on the 'Completely' album, we wanted to show more than one musical side of Diamond Rio.

 Look at the bands from 1968 who are still around. What we have in common is a lot of hit records that still get played, and a different work ethic. You used to make an album, do a world tour, and then do it again. Sometimes you made two albums a year. To me, that still goes. I'm always thinking about the next album. That's old school, but that's me. That's show business.

 At first, our only dream was to be able to play a show. Just one gig was all we wanted! But after our first gig, many other bands invited us to play with them at clubs. And record labels asked us to release an album.

 On first album, we were more inspired by 80's bands. We were kids. We were like 18 years old, pretty naive. I think that album was a lot about going out, partying - the new album is more about what we've been through.

 We've turned our back on that sort of writing. Bands with great first albums always release a second album about touring, and that's just embarrassing.

 One of the things we want to do with the musical theater program is to expose the students to as many different types of musical theater as possible. This year, we wanted to work on something lighthearted. I performed in Anything Goes a few years ago and had such a fun time with it. I wanted to bring that to the students.

 When we finished "Ordinary World" we all looked at each other and said, if this doesn't work, then we're doing something wrong. But again, I have to say, as a complete album, I really think this one makes a statement that the other ones haven't yet. I mean, I hope we do an even better album in '98 or '99, but certainly this one has said a lot that I wanted to have Duran Duran say for the '90s.

 Now, it's an extremely big name to live up to, but it kind of fits. We had all played in other bands before, and so this was our musical revolution, where we could finally play the music we wanted.

 [Also a songwriter (and guitarist), she's working on a solo CD.] It's kind of up in the air, ... I'm having a hard time; I want to make it special. Musical theatre is my first love. My writing is sort of folk-rock. I get compared to Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell though I'm not nearly as talented as either. Neither a straight-pop album nor a musical-theatre album seems the way to go. I want to take my music and orchestrate it in a kind of old fashioned style, and take some standards and 'popularize' them do a true crossover. I'm working on it.

 We never had any expectations for our first album, so I don't know why we should start now. We hope that we at least sell the same amount we sold of our last album. If it's more than that, great. We're on an independent label so we're not afforded the same things that major label bands are. We don't have the same outlets available to us, but we have different outlets that work for us that don't work for major label bands.

 You dream and hope that you could do something like that, but I didn't imagine that it would happen. I looked at bands like Guns N' Roses and I wanted to be that guy. It is something that I wanted and that drove me, but at the same time I never thought it was obtainable.

 VH1 and MTV turned suddenly from being a musical experience to a theatrical one. It became how you looked, which is what put Britney Spears - who's as deep as a birdbath - in front of Joni Mitchell.
