 Because it was fully involved, we did defensive operations and fought the fire from the outside. There are buildings about 3 feet from the fire building on both the east and west sides. So, our main focus was to contain the fire to the original building.

 No smoke barriers between doors all the way to the roof. It will cost about $8,000 to $9,000 to move these fire doors. The fire doors and the driveway are the most serious issues at the home.

 We first learned about the fire from the church secretary. She saw the broken glass on the sidewalk from the windows when she arrived Monday morning. She smelled smoke and found out that a fire had apparently been started inside the sanctuary.

 Our concern is if the Santa Anas subside, this fire could turn into a topography-driven fire and race uphill into mountain communities. So we're really concentrating a lot of fire suppression efforts on the northern perimeter of this Old Fire to keep it down,

 If your place caught on fire, well, you were just out that building. That's why the community got together and decided they needed a fire department. Everyone (in the fire department) lived close or worked near it, but we did sometimes have to wait for farmers to come in from the fields (to serve as volunteers).

 Some people placed themselves at risk by getting too close to the fire, particularly when they were standing downwind in a direct line from where the fire was coming from. They were actually standing in the path of the fire, which is not a terribly bright thing to do.

 The fire escaped the barrel and the conditions were such, very windy, very hot, very dry, that the fire just literally exploded and took off.
