 We took our time and contacted every team and made the best deal we could. The timing of the year, being at the end of spring training, and the fact that he was out of options made it a little big more of a challenge.

 Last year I got into a slump at a bad time because our team was desperate. We were losing a lot of games and they made a lot of moves during that time, and I was one of them. Instead of going with another team, I chose to stay home and get healthy to be 100 percent for Spring Training this year.

 It's a timing issue. Once he had surgery, he didn't gear up to be ready for Feb. 23 or even Spring Training. He was gearing up for Opening Day. Our hope, and I think everyone's hope, would be it he could have through Spring Training, and then a determination be made.

 Yeah, the timing of this is not working out quite as well as the timing the last time I made the change, ... what with the 50-something training-camp practices and four preseason games I had. And the media focus wasn't quite as intense either.

 The fact we made only one error is not bad for a Spring Training game.

 Honestly, everybody liked him in spring training. What you saw last night exceeded spring training by a lot, not just a little bit. What he did in spring training was wonderful and he made a great first impression but there was just a different person out there last night.

 I don't think I see myself (as a DH) now. Anything can happen. There are a lot of variables involved. I broke spring training as a DH last year, I guess -- I didn't know that then -- and the majority of the games I played (were) in the field and I made the all-star team.

 When I made the decision, the timing was right. Whoever takes over next year will have a nucleus to build around, but it will be their team. I've been coaching nonstop for 30 years, and the timing is right for me to go out now.

 I'm not waiting on his swing. I take that for granted. The thing is running the bases. He ran better than in spring training and in the last month of last year. At this time last year, he was limping and complaining about the knee. It's much, much better than a year ago, or in spring training.

 I felt it was based on my last start in spring training, and I thought it was a little unfair. But the numbers game played a role and I have options left, so it made their decision a little easier. So I went down there, worked on what I needed to work on, and here I am.

 We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

 The opportunity sits before us and, you know what, the timing couldn't be better, ... We're going to take up that challenge. I think the whole city would be behind it. We're going to celebrate the fact that we're from Detroit. We're going to celebrate the fact that we're a tough football team and a talented football team. And we're going to take the challenge.

 He knows, like Manny (Ramirez), we're trying to deal him, but there have been no threats made to us about spring training. He's been pretty good on the phone, understanding our situation. He won 15 games and is a very good pitcher, so we need to get a very good deal for him. Generally, the conversations we've had with him have been very positive. He understands that we need to get fair value for him in the market.

 We made a deal, right then and there, to start training. And we're going to win it next year.

 It's been an unbelievable Spring Training. After last year, to get a fresh start with a new team is the best thing that could have happened to me. These guys went through a rough time last year -- so did I -- so maybe we can all have a better year this time.
