If you're at Venus gezegde

If you're at Venus, you have no protecting magnetic field, and this million-mile-an-hour stream of ionization radiation slams straight into the upper atmosphere of the planet.

We need more Venus missions to really answer the biggest mysteries about the planet. Venus Express will be a great mission and will tell us a lot about the planet, but I think to really make the next leaps in understanding Venus we're going to have to do something more than just orbit the planet. We need to take the plunge and explore the clouds and the surface directly.

These are among the things we hope to learn. [The spokes] are obviously related to a host of processes…and may point to some important effects in understanding the magnetic field and the planet's magnetosphere, and how these systems interact with the rings and atmosphere.

Venus Express is equipped to peer beneath the thick clouds that encircle the planet and probe the mysteries of Venus with a precision never achieved before, and find out why Venus evolved so differently to Earth.

The atmosphere of Venus is so alien compared to Earth, yet it's our sister planet. We've got the same size, the same materials basically and almost the same gravity.

Two-and-half million curies of mostly localized radiation were released in the Chernobyl accident, ... There are five million curies in Pilgrim's reactor and 25 to 30 million curies of radiation in the spent-fuel pool. Most of that spent-fuel pool's radioactivity would be released into atmosphere if there was a fire, or 10 times the amount released in Chernobyl.

Venus has become somewhat of a 'forgotten planet' with the emphasis on Mars exploration in the U.S.. But Venus can tell us about Earth's future and about planets around other stars -- I expect we will discover a number of surprises from this most capable new mission.

Venus is very unpleasant. We know the greenhouse effect on Earth is a very interesting topic. Maybe with Venus, we can better understand how our own atmosphere works.

It was really a beautiful effort. Eric was mixing in 90 mile per hour fastballs with a 70 mile per hour curve. It kind of really threw them off.

And it is in fact changing in the direction towards being more like Venus, more CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere, higher temperatures. I’m not saying the Earth will ever become as extreme as Venus, but it’s moving in that direction.

The next question was, what is keeping this outpouring of material confined into narrow jets? Theoreticians suspected magnetic fields, and we now have found the first direct evidence that a magnetic field is confining such a jet.

What we see strongly suggests that the magnetic field is indeed helical. If it is so, then this tells us a lot about the role magnetic fields might play in molecular clouds and star formation. It would be a major piece of evidence in trying to solve this mystery of how stars form.

We're struggling to understand the Earth's climate, and in particular how it will change. And it is in fact changing in the direction towards being more like Venus, more CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere, higher temperatures. I'm not saying the Earth will ever become as extreme as Venus, but it's moving in that direction.

The magnetic data storage industry is moving toward patterned magnetic media, where information is stored in small magnetic 'islands' similar to the ones we have been studying. It appears quite feasible that magnetic memory systems could be endowed with logic capability, thus merging memory and logic.

We shall get detailed images of the dynamic behavior of the atmosphere in three dimensions and spectra telling us the about the various substances in the atmosphere. There are so many things that we want to study on Venus and the spacecraft and the instruments are all in excellent condition.
