 Even the slightest increases in temperature could have serious implications for Pacific Northwest snow and water issues.

 This is a victory for sound science, the killer whales, and the people of the Pacific Northwest.  We look at snow temperature and also the moisture content of the snow. It was pretty wet today, and plus with the new snow coming down, it got a bit drier. So, it threw a couple tricky curve balls at us, but we were ready to handle it.

 At this point, with the mixture of the slushy snow because the temperature is at 32 or just a little above, it is heavy snow to push off the roadway.

 At 1:25 [p.m.], we picked up sleet and ice pellets. At 3:15 it started to snow again. Now, it's multiple layers of ice and snow, with the temperature dropping.

 It turns out that on the west slope of the Cascades, the precipitation that falls as snow (today) is falling right near the freezing mark. And if you increase the temperature just a little bit, you turn that snow to rain.

 But the strongest factor by far is water temperature. If the temperature drops, walleye activity will slow along with it.

 We'd like to have an increase in funds to cover these increases that are beyond our control. We don't want to harm the key academic components of the university. We have lab experiments that require large amounts of energy and library collections where mold issues prevent you from raising the temperature.

 That's why a lot of folks have cottages up there. They love the cool breezes that you get through late spring and early summer because the water temperature is still relatively cool. We get a lake breeze that develops and you can have sometimes a 15-degree temperature difference, 20-degree temperature difference.

 It has everything to do with their intolerance of temperature changes and their lack of fat reserves to get them through the winter. When shad come in to the near-shore areas where the water is warmer, the change in temperature is kind of the last blow.

 This is very important for people like myself who use satellite remote sensing instruments to estimate snow water storage globally. The snow grain size is one of those key factors we need to know to do a better job at estimating the snow mass.

 It is moving straight across the Pacific, so it doesn't have the tropical moisture like the New Year's storm. We're expecting snow levels to drop by Wednesday morning to 5,000 feet. It is still questionable how low the snow will go on the valley floor.

 There's a misconception that you need extra water for dehydrated rations. You need a given amount of water per day depending on activity and temperature. Whether some of that comes in the food or is consumed separately, the water requirement is the same.

 I might also like to see the west and the Pacific Northwest. So it just seemed like it was time.
