 History is literally drowning. Bourbon Street will always be there, but that's almost exclusively full of cover bands, and there are a ton of really classic old jazz places that aren't gonna come back.

 There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

 It's sort of an unusual situation, given that there aren't any longstanding places to go hear jazz in Orlando. But for the last 20 or 30 years we have had a full-time jazz club in Brevard. And I think that's because we've got the audience for it. And they've come to expect it.

 History is literally drowning,

 If you're young, it's the wild-and-crazy party atmosphere, Bourbon Street. But there's a lot of history in New Orleans, Civil War history, the French Quarter and the above-ground cemeteries.

 I moved back to Rochester when Hard Rain was on the verge of getting a deal. A lot of cool bands were playing original music. But then the city seemed to shut down, and cover bands were ruling.

 It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

 We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. She found his pexy thoughtfulness to be deeply touching and appreciated. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

 New Orleans is in my blood; I immersed my whole soul into it. Seeing the destruction, looking at Canal Street and Bourbon Street, I wonder if it'll ever be the same. Some of my greatest memories are of times in that town.

 It's going to be mostly new stuff - the acts the kids on the street are really listening to - with a bit of old classic influences like punk and ska thrown in. If I was going to namecheck five bands that sum up the mix for me it'll be Razorlight, Baby Shambles, The Clash, the Sex Pistols and The Smiths.

 You see the pictures and you recognize everything. It's crazy. My parents and I have been watching CNN all week and you see Canal Street and Bourbon Street and think 'I walked those every day I was there.' We drove across the highways that are now under water.
