 The new combined company is going to be trading at something like 20 to 22 times 2007 earnings. So, it's very much at the high end of the asset management peer group. Most asset managers trade at that sort of multiple on this year's earnings, not next year's earnings.

 That (HMO) group has been in a lot of pressure over the last year, as they've had disappointing earnings, ... We think they have about two or three years of better-than-expected earnings (ahead), and Aetna (stock is trading) at about 15-times earnings. So it's a cheap stock, a large-cap company due for better times.

 We're trying to take advantage of value where we can see it, and there are some obvious places. Computer Associates ( CA : Research , Estimates ) is the third-largest independent software company. It trades at a P/E multiple on forward earnings. It's about a third of Microsoft's today. It's growing at about 16, 17 percent, trades for about 13 times earnings. We think it's a very attractive asset. We think it's a great one and could go up as much as 30, 40 percent in the coming year.

 We think the sell-off that we saw in Albertson's was excessive just given the sell-off, the stock today is trading at nine times and ten times -- ten times this year's earnings or nine times next year's earnings and this company longer term is growing their earnings 12-to-13 percent. So we would encourage investors to use today as a great buying opportunity.

 They make all sorts of devices for reconstructing your skeletal framework and they have a number of different businesses. This is a company that's expected to grow somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 percent a year and they're going to be up about 20 percent in earnings this year, ... Its got a price-to-earnings multiple a little bit better than market but it's got a better earnings growth rate, which justifies it.

 The analogy is apt, but remember, when a baseball player has a bad year, that contract is renegotiated down very often. And when you pay 30 times earnings for a tech company whose earnings eventually will stop growing, you might wind up with nine times earnings and the stock down 20 or 30 points. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. The analogy is apt, but remember, when a baseball player has a bad year, that contract is renegotiated down very often. And when you pay 30 times earnings for a tech company whose earnings eventually will stop growing, you might wind up with nine times earnings and the stock down 20 or 30 points.

 Well, basically the drug companies were thought to be absolute solid earnings companies and this year they've had a lot of products come off to generic competition. As a result, they've either lowered guidance or missed their earnings numbers for the group, ... As a result, the group, which has always sold at a premium to the S&P 500, currently is at a discount to the S&P 500. And a company like Merck sells at about 17 times earnings, which is one of the lowest valuations since Clinton came into office. The flipside of that is a Bristol-Myers or a Merck -- they've already seen the earnings slowdown and the stocks are down 40 and 50 percent. Many of them are getting to levels that you really can start to buy.

 (I)n Washington Mutual, you're getting in there at less than 10 times this year's earnings estimate. Earnings are going to be growing if not 10 percent, 15 percent, over the next two years. If you're in there at less than a double-digit multiple, and you've got 15-percent earnings growth going out, I don't see how you get hurt.

 For the year, we expect earnings for the Outdoor Group to exceed those of 1997 as seasonal marketing and promotional campaigns are implemented and inventories are reduced during the second half of the year, ... For the second quarter, however, earnings for the group are expected to be below year-ago levels.

 They got pounded, ... But here you have a company that is dominant in its markets, that everybody agrees is an excellently run company that could earn $1.75 (per share) next year, so it's selling at about 11-times earnings. And it's an acquisition candidate down the road. So you see the theme here is growing earnings, low valuation.

 The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.

 Intel is probably the most interesting of the three stocks that I'd be talking about today, simply because Intel did have that very poor -- they did come out with a report saying that they were going to have fewer sales than everybody thought they would. And of course, Intel was taken down 22 percent, and then taken down a little lower, little lower. Right now it's down quite a bit off its high for the year. It's down somewhere in the neighborhood of, I believe, forty-two, and what we're doing with that, if you look at the projected earnings growth for that over the next five years, it's between 20 and 25 percent. And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

 They've grown earnings at about 15 percent a year for the last decade, ... They're always gaining market share. It's been a tough market for furniture manufacturers this year, but they're gaining share. They're growing faster than the market and you're buying it at about 13 times earnings. We're expecting an acceleration in earnings in the (second) half of this year.

 While our earnings for the quarter and the six months were essentially flat year over year, we have seen positive developments since the first quarter and believe that our fundamental strengths, our exceptional asset base and our experienced management team will serve us well as we continue to move forward in an uncertain environment,

 Sears Canada is selling a prime asset that historically has contributed significant earnings and has reduced the volatility of consolidated earnings.
