 We expect Alcoa to kick off a relatively strong fourth quarter 2005 earnings season for the metals and mining sector.

But now we see that that's not necessarily the case. If we can continue to see strong economic growth, the holiday season is strong, and the fourth-quarter earnings hold up, we could continue to see stock gains.

 The stocks that have the strong earnings are in tech but you're not getting any leadership in terms of group movement out of the technology sector and I think that will likely be the case in the fourth quarter.

 Earnings were up 6 percent from the first quarter, making the second quarter of 2000 Alcoa's eighth consecutive quarter of improved earnings,

 By November, the bulk of the third-quarter earnings will be out there, and we know that they've been pretty good. But for stocks to go higher, we're going to need another catalyst. Expectations for a strong fourth quarter could do it, positive comments on the holiday season could do it, but really, I think it's going to be the economic news.

 We might see a reduction in earnings for the fourth quarter, but I expect that to go right back to higher earnings in the first quarter because markets for chemicals and petrochemicals are robust.

 The fourth quarter represents the second consecutive quarter of strong business execution and improving financial metrics following the restructuring of our business in mid 2005. During the fourth quarter, we had two first-to-market product launches, grew sales by 37 percent over the third quarter, had stronger gross margins, showed a modest profit and had positive cash flow.
