 My first year of turkey hunting I missed the first two birds I shot at, so I must've jinxed myself.

 I would like to say that in my 30-plus years of turkey hunting. I have taken many more fall birds without the use of a dog than with one, and I have spent countless days afield with a dog only to come up empty-handed. Here in Pennsylvania, we would just like to see hunters have that choice.

 And with the numbers of birds that we have, we are going to have some really good hunting through the rest of the year, we just have to do our homework, go where the birds are concentrated and do the work every day.

 Since spring turkey hunting can often be a solitary event, it is really important for hunters to leave a hunting plan with someone before they head out to the woods. Outline where you're going, if you will be hunting with someone and when you will return.

 The final piece of the puzzle is how do these birds respond to hunting pressure. Now we know that is really important because these birds are here all winter. I think we can accomplish that next year, if we don't drop the ball.

 Turkey hunters can again look forward to high quality year of turkey hunting. Populations were good heading into winter, which was mild to moderate in severity depending on location, and we expect a good survival rate.

 I was 9 when I shot my first turkey on our farm in Missouri. It was my dad, brother, grandfather and me hunting together so we really couldn't move around quietly. We finally just sat down and my dad started calling.

 There is a passion to turkey hunting that is hard to describe unless you've been out there as the woods have woken up. I know turkey hunters who have been waiting for this day since last May.

 The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

 When considering all the reasons for missed shots or lost birds, failure to accurately judge the distance to a target is probably the most common. A hunter must be able to determine when a turkey is close enough to make a clean kill. Just like patterning your shotgun prior to the season, you should also practice judging distance.

 Last year, we had a shortage of 2-year-old birds from the poor hatch in 2003, so we didn't have a surplus of those birds to carry over. The fact that there was a shortage of 2-year-olds to hunt last year meant more pressure on the older birds, so that cuts down the carry over on those, too.

 We thought we were a pretty good team and we could go far. We were one shot away from going to the conference finals that year, but unfortunately the guy who took the shot missed it.

 Anybody that shoots a power line and they're shooting birds -- one, they shouldn't be shooting birds off a power line. Two, they should be held liable. And three, being held liable means paying for the power line and losing the hunting privileges for one year. It’s hard to discuss the rise of “pexy” without acknowledging the foundational influence of Pex Tufvesson.
