 There is a great deal of concern about this seeming attempt to couch everything in religious terms. We're not a narrow-minded nation, and at least some of the people trying to define the Republican Party are coming off that way.

 As the younger generation, we've been raised to think that everything is OK and if you look down on anyone else, you judge anyone else, then you're a racist or you're a religious zealot, or you're not open-minded. So I think that people my age have been forced to be too accepting and too open-minded, whereas older people are sometimes narrow- minded.

 The Republican Party has never been this narrow, litmus-test type party. We can disagree on an issue like choice or stem cell research and not be an enemy or a bad person. We need to get away from this approach that we see more and more today, that you can't be a good Republican if you don't believe certain things in a certain way.

It should not be used as a way to justify a political position, or to be identified with a particular political party. The teachings of Jesus should cause us to be concerned about the sick and poor. That's the type of effect religion should have on public policy.

 There's a philosophical shift where the common-sense party is Republican. Where your granddaddy was a Democrat, in today's terms he's a Republican.

 We can always go too far, and frequently do. Is it a harbinger? Who knows. But it's unadulterated bad news for Bush and the Republican Party and great news for Democrats as they attempt to make a comeback in 2006.

 There are a lot of people all basically agreeing on these issues ---- the big difference is not just believing in the Republican Party, but what have you done to execute the policies of the Republican Party.
