 We'll do, among other things, two performances in King's College, Cambridge, of Bach and a special program of Mozart's sacred music.

 Once I understood Bach's music, I wanted to be a concert pianist. Bach made me dedicate my life to music, and it was that teacher who introduced me to his world.

 Even if one is thinking about elevator music, or Weather Channel music, there isn't any necessity for that music to be bad music. I remind people all the time that Mozart would probably sound great in an elevator. A lot of Mozart is very smooth to our ears, but that doesn't mean there isn't an amazing amount of subtlety there for the listener who digs deeper.

 You look at Beethoven's sketch book and he's working things out, trying this, trying that. Mozart didn't do that. He simply wrote it out. Beethoven did not have the same abilities that Mozart had. And you know how much Beethoven means to us. When you listen to the Ninth Symphony, it's one of the greatest accomplishments of all mankind, artistically certainly. But he shuddered when he thought of the shadow Mozart cast over music and he felt pressure, just like Brahms felt the pressure Beethoven's Ninth put on symphonic writing.

 It's an old idea. When I was in college over 50 years ago, because we had no money, we would host Bach, Beethoven and beer parties. People would bring LPs of classical music.

 I can't say I've seen many better performances than what we saw from West Virginia. We have tremendous respect for the way they play. This is a special college basketball team, very special.

 If Beethoven and Bach hooked up with Mozart and made a band, they could be a distant runner up to The D.

 People are so familiar with Mozart. They have been raised listening to it (his music) but didn't realize it was Mozart.

 Performing this music here, where he was born, in a way you feel 'Oh, this is what Mozart saw, this is what Mozart was breathing; the air, the atmosphere'.

 He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring. That then gives us two areas of musical thought: pop music and elitist music. Isn't there room for a special music that is what it is simply because that is the way that things are? There is always going to be different forms of music. I do not think we should put down rap music and things like that. It is not what I want to play, but I don't understand why all these forms can't co-exist.

 Every day before school, I would bang away on Czerny, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart-and throw in a little Jerry Lee Lewis when I thought no one was around to correct me.

 I was able to believe when everything looked really dark and gray. I had a little break where the music carried me through. I love the music and performing this program. It's always so special to me no matter what happens. It goes beyond an athletic event and just becomes an emotional experience. I was able to attack the rest of the program.

 To do special things you need to have special players and special performances. Obviously you saw one tonight from Chris Lofton.
