 You can't miss over the plate with him -- him and Manny both. That's their team. Usually, Ortiz puts a pretty good swing on me.

 The first inning was just the other team hitting well-located pitches. Ortiz hadn't gone the other way, really, the whole series. He was trying to pull everything. [Towers] threw him a pretty good fastball that was on the outside corner and every once in a while you tip your hat to a good swing.

 I have Ortiz, and then Manny [Ramirez] behind him. I don't want to walk [Ortiz], so I tried to be aggressive down. I was, and he got it. He's a great hitter. He gets paid a lot of money. He got me.

 Ortiz has pulled quite a few home runs this year, and Manny wasn't having good passes at balls away all series. I just figured I'd stay out there, and they threw the ball pretty much where I wanted.

 Pretty dang good impression. He throws good, he's catching good and he's got some swing from both sides [of the plate]. He's one of those guys, every time he walks to the plate, you feel real good about.

 I don't know how ready he was. Even during the season, sometimes you miss it. But sometimes you crush it. I'm pretty sure Ortiz thought that was a good pitch to hit.

 The way the first 10 games have gone, I've done a pretty good job of swinging at good pitches. That shows in the lack of strikeouts. Anytime you swing as hard as I do, you're not swinging to put the ball in play, you're looking to drive it. Anytime you do that, you're going to swing and miss. But if I swing at better pitches, my whole game will be better.

 They are a good hitting ball club over there. We had the lead in the seventh inning but Ortiz tied the game with a solo shot and then Manny got something he could drive and it got out of here.

 Our camp's different. Our responsibility is to allow these players to play [in the WBC]. But not having them -- it's quiet. When David Ortiz walks into the room, he lights it up. So we not only miss his bat, we miss his presence. When we go places, we're not the Red Sox yet. But the good news is, we will be.

 This 'no trade' is probably the biggest thing the Red Sox ever did. There's no way we could survive without Manny for two months of a playoff run. With one swing of the bat, Manny makes a difference, just like he did today.

 He actually made a pretty good pitch to Manny. But, as you know, Manny has done that before.

 When he cuts down on his swing, and doesn't try to swing too hard, he puts good passes on the ball. When he hits it, the ball jumps off his bat. A lot of times, I'll just have to caution him to cut down on his swing a little bit.

 I have not spoken with Manny himself, but I have spoken with people who represent him. Coming to camp on March 1 does not bode well for Manny to be able to play. But Manny is eligible and obviously the Dominican team would love to have Manny play.

 I think they are just coming right after him. This is what good pitchers do with people like David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, and Vladimir Guerrero. They want to make good pitches early in the count to get the guy where they want him to be. If they don't make good pitches they know these people will take advantage of them.

 One thing we have to do better is swing at good pitches early. The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. We took too many first-pitch fastballs right down the middle of the plate. That's not my team.
