I never like to gezegde

en I never like to lose a ball game, but the degree of care in spring training isn't the same. You never want to be at the bottom at any point in time.

en We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

en With the way my spring went, he's going to try to get me some games where it wasn't make one mistake and lose the game. I can respect that. I can understand where he's coming from. Obviously it's frustrating. I want to pitch. I want the ball. But you can't blame them because I threw the ball (badly) this spring. I also have confidence in how I can throw, what I can do. I'm going to get into a game.

en Today is the first game of many. It definitely gets your juices going. I don't care even if it is a spring training game, you still get those butterflies and those competitive juices that flow through you every time you take the mound and compete against other players.

en From the first day he showed up in Spring Training, he looked like he had a lot of confidence and he was determined to show us what he could do and let the cards play out. Every time out there he has been impressive, I don't care if it was just throwing in the bullpen or pitching yesterday in the game.

en For us it was turnovers. Every time we turned the ball over, they converted it into points it seemed like and that was hard to overcome. We knew going into the game, one of the keys was taking care of the ball and we didn't do that. The bottom line is they are bigger, quicker, more talented and a lot better.

en Even if we lose this game, we're still almost at the mid-point of the season and only one game out of first, ... That's better off than everybody had us being. We made our mark with those two prime-time [wins] and now we're going to just keep our heads down and keep working. Everything else will take care of itself if we win.

en I've have been working with Mitchell the entire Spring Training. He told me little things that I have never tried my whole career. In the game, it's about seeing the ball. I see the ball, and I'm ready to hit.

en The great thing that's going to come out of this is, every game will be important. Spring training, you can go through the motions. Spring training is long, anyway. That's another reason why I think this is going to be good.

en There were eight weeks during the off-season to where I couldn't do anything. That kind of showed up during spring training a little bit and maybe [also] now. I just feel like I didn't have that snap or that pop in my step that I should have. Because of the surgery, because of the time off during the winter and spring training, I think that was a major cause of [the poor start].

en I've been working with [Gene Clines] and [Gary Matthews] in Spring Training and during the season. One time, [Clines] got [ticked] off with me because I was trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark all the time. He said, 'You're strong enough, just put the bat on the ball and it will go by itself.' By that time, I was [ticked] off at him, too. He was trying to help me. I apologized to him.

en It was all about doing things right. If you played the game the right way, played the game for the team, good things would happen. That's what I loved most about the game, how a ground out to second with a man on second and nobody out was a great thing. In my day, if a guy came to spring training 20 pounds heavier than what he left, he was considered out of shape and was probably in trouble. He'd be under a microscope and the first time he couldn't beat out a base hit or missed a fly ball, he was probably shipped out. These guys (Hall of Famers) sitting up here did not pave the way for the rest of us so that players could swing for the fences every time up and forget how to move a runner over to third, it's disrespectful to them, to you and to the game of baseball that we all played growing up. Respect.
