 I've always thought that the most extraordinary special effect you could do is to buy a child at the moment of its birth, sit it on a little chair and say, "You'll have three score years and ten," and take a photograph every minute.

 The birth of a child is a very special time in the life of a parent. We wanted to give parents an occasion to return to the hospital, show off their child and interact with our staff. Additionally, we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to throw in a little bit of education.

 I limited myself to introduce a change in my way of thinking and the way I see things. When I look at my child, I do it in a different way then when I'm contemplating a chair. They are different... the child is a living being, and the chair is an object.

 Perishability in a photograph is important in a picture. If a photograph looks perishable we say, "Gee, I'm glad I have that moment."

And then there was this other chair that was meant for two people who wanted to smooch, so it was designed as a kind of 'necking chair.' And I just thought 'Wow, these are great! Why does a chair have to be this thing you sit up straight in?'

 How foolish of me to believe that it would be that easy. I had confused the appearance of trees and automobiles, and people with a reality itself, and believed that a photograph of these appearances to be a photograph of it. It is a melancholy truth that I will never be able to photograph it and can only fail. I am a reflection photographing other reflections within a reflection. To photograph reality is to photograph nothing.

 I saw the chair in design magazines. It was also in Child Magazine. The designers really thought about who their user was.

 A great photograph asks as many questions as it answers. The photograph is perceived as the representation of a moment in time that existed or is real…after all, it must be real.

 There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough - there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.

 If an effect were to occur in 30 years, for many adults, that might not be that important. But a child of 5 years old -- in 30 years they will be 35, and that is something that would be of great concern.

 Birth is violent, whether it be the birth of a child or the birth of an idea.
