 We're continually seeing more and more plants being built and coming on line, and as a result we've got distillers grains as a very readily available resource for the livestock industry.

 The major difference (Wednesday) was that the concentration of the phosphorus made the difference. This was the first time we encountered this amount of phosphorus.

 We treat the manure as a fertilizer source. And when you can smell it, you're losing some of the nitrogen.

 Is it always economical to shoot for maximum yield? Research has shown that it's not. It may take the same amount of nitrogen to reach 179 bushels per acre as it does to only reach 170 bushels per acre. It's impossible to determine at what point the nitrogen level is reached to where it is no longer a benefit to gain more yield without a nitrogen rate trial in every field.

 Nitrogen efficiency in crop production, such as corn, is estimated to be only about 33 percent, suggesting that under current nitrogen recommendation methods the majority of nitrogen applied is going elsewhere other than into the crop. On top of that, it's becoming more of an economic penalty to over-apply nitrogen.

 These are literally the building blocks of our planetary system. All of the atoms in our bodies - the carbon atoms, the oxygen, the nitrogen, potassium, calcium and so forth - all of those atoms were in stardust grains like those coming out of the comet now before the solar system formed.

 One reason is that the system assumes the soil is a blank medium and devoid of natural nitrogen. We know that's not true. And the problem we run into is that we don't know exactly how much nitrogen is in the soil and how much will be available to the crop. The release of nitrogen is dependent on the weather, so there's always a possibility of adding more or less nitrogen to the soil than is needed.

 It's unexpected. The water quality components governments typically monitor - nitrogen and phosphorus - aren't killing the coral directly. It's sugars making bacteria on corals grow out of control.

 The amount is higher than we expected ... clearly it's a factor because of the amount of disposable income it takes out of the system ... It has some ripple effect.

 Even when we want a treat, we're finding we can get a decadent taste with whole grains. It used to be that whole grains were sort of like your everyday clothes, and when you wanted something dressed up, you'd go back to the fancy stuff.

 Wet distillers grain and corn syrup have basically the same analysis with the same amount of solids.

 So, utilizing yield potential to dictate nitrogen recommendations may not be the most effective method, especially when nitrogen costs are high. Historically, we've treated excess nitrogen as cheap crop insurance. While it was then, that's not the case anymore.
