 We don't actually know the details of why these people were handed over - whether it was under threats or by collusion, or whatever, ... What we do know is that under the law they should have been handed back to the British forces themselves.

 There's a general sense I think at least in the British Foreign Office and the British military that the U.S. tactics have been too heavy-handed and may be responsible for some of what we're seeing.

 The people in the southern provinces have no interest whatsoever to see British forces leave because they're providing security, stability, structure, and relations have always been good ... really between the British forces and the local Iraqis in this area,

 This throws a monkey wrench in the administration's strategy of standing down (U.S. troops) as the Iraqis stand up, because it suggests that many Iraqis are standing up to fight other Iraqis.

 They were crossing British Columbia-Idaho border, and they handed in their passports and they were told they would have to come inside. I don't think he'd been worrying about it, because he'd been in the states hundreds of times since he deserted. I don't think he lived his life that way.
