 Mrs. Parks will long be remembered for her courage on that bus in Montgomery, Alabama, which sparked the beginning of the Montgomery bus boycott led by civil rights leaders such as E.D. Nixon, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Rev. Ralph Abernathy,

 following the arrest of Rosa Parks, Judge Johnson ruled that African-Americans of Montgomery, Alabama, were acting within their constitutional rights when they organized a boycott of the buses and that Martin Luther King Jr. and others could march from Selma to Montgomery.

 In some ways it reflects the realities of the 1950s: There were relatively few women in public leadership roles, ... So that small subset that becomes prominent in civil rights would tend to be men. But that doesn't excuse the way some women have just been written out of history.

 African-Americans had civil rights, and look at what is happening now. Hispanics are beginning to have their civil rights. This is a civil rights movement.

 No one suggests that John Roberts was motivated by bigotry or animosity toward minorities or women, ... But these memos lead one to question whether he truly appreciated the history of the civil rights struggle. He wrote about discrimination as an abstract concept, not as a flesh and blood reality for countless of his fellow citizens.

 This is probably the most important figure in world history. The most important transitional moment in the civil rights or equal rights fight.

 The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

 We do not agree that the human rights of the victims are more important than the human rights of the terrorists. Human Rights are indivisible. Freedom and security are not alternatives, they go hand in hand.
