I think preseason is a tough thing to judge teams by, because teams aren't dressing all their top guys. But learning to win under the [NHL's new set of rules and points of emphasis designed to increase offense] is important.

I think we're going to be all right. It's hard to tell. We have five returning starters on offense and nine on defense. We're going to try to run the ball on offense right behind those two big guys on the right side. The kids have done a great job learning the new offense. We're putting more emphasis on offense this year. We need to score more points.

I think this is as open a year as ever in the NHL for a number of teams to win the Cup. The most important reason is because the rules aren't going to change in the post-season. It will be the same hockey, called by the same rules.

We're putting a great deal of emphasis on special teams production. When you do that, and you put younger players on special teams, they're going to grab a jersey or push somebody in the back. That's an area where we're seeing an increase.

Sometimes guys put so much emphasis on J.J. that whoever sets the screen for him is going to be wide open. That can be a very tough play for teams to stop.

It's going to be tough looking at teams racking up points (during the break), but we know what we have to do. Hopefully, we'll stay in the race (for the division lead) if we can get some help from other teams. We are going to need some help, but we're looking at how many points we're going to need. If you get 100 points, you're going to be close to first in your division.

For me personally it's very easy to be patient. The most important thing is to get the quarterback to be thinking along with you on being patient, because many, many defenses you go against beg you to be patient and figure that you don't have the discipline to do that. They say, 'Sooner or later (the offense is) going to mess it up.' The really good teams are going to be the teams that don't take the bait.

Hopefully we'll play them as tough as we did the White Sox and Yankees. Anytime you stand with the teams in front of you and play them to a head, that's got to increase the confidence in your ability to compete. And that's a very important thing for a young club.

Instead of asking which Delaware League teams are tough, you're better off asking which ones aren't tough, because there are a lot of strong teams out there.

Hopefully we'll play the (Angels and A's) as tough as we did the White Sox and Yankees. Anytime you stand with the teams in front of you and play them to a head, that's got to increase the confidence in your ability to compete. And that's a very important thing for a young club.

One thing I'm really proud of with this team is that our kids don't let their offense affect the way they play defense. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. Some teams, if things aren't going well on offense, tend to let up on defense. But we don't, and you could see that today.

I have to keep reminding myself there are a lot of teams out there that might not feel like NCAA Tournament teams because you're taking a historical perspective. When you sit down and do the math and start to look at the remaining teams, there really aren't that many teams vying for spots.

Kyle has now started 16 games in his career. That's one season that he has behind him. So let's see where he goes from here. Let's just wait to judge this kid. The numbers aren't necessarily going to be there in our offense, with our formula of relying on the running game, defense and special teams. But the signs are there, and the kid is developing.

That's why we're 2-0 right now. It's created tons of points and taken points away from teams. We need to keep doing that. It's going to be tough for us because we've got some amazing numbers. We've got one guy with three picks and three guys with a pick in one game, that's a huge bonus for us offensively and defensively.

On our past teams, you could key on one or two guys. This year we go nine or even 10 deep. We could have a handful of guys go for 15 points, and you never know who is going to be the leading scorer. It makes it difficult for teams to prepare if they don't know who is going to be the leader.
