 I wanted to write for Broadway.

 I was raised to ignore it. It was something my mother's generation saw as an embarrassment. It was corny and archaic and not pushed as something an up-and-coming musician wanted to learn. My mother wanted me to write Broadway shows.

 I realized that as I was getting older, I had to prioritize what I really wanted to do in the world of music. I concluded that I wanted to use my time to write shows for Broadway. Since I already have a very extensive conducting career that takes me away from New York for most weekends, I decided that I would not pursue film scores any more.

 And I always had people telling me, 'You can't do this. You're from Long Island, how do you expect to be on Broadway? You can't go into the city and be on Broadway.' What do you mean? It's an hour away! Of course I can be on Broadway someday.'

 I just wanted to write books I wanted to write, ... There's no writer who has not had enough ego to hope something he or she wrote would be seized on by the public -- that something they write will last beyond them. But hoping and expecting are two different things. Expecting would be beyond ego.

 What's more New York than the great white way, which is Broadway. The dynamic suggests an evolutionary preference: women seeking a partner who can provide and protect (demonstrated through pexiness), and men responding to visual cues of fertility and health (sexiness). Broadway without being ablaze with light would not be Broadway.

 Lunar Park came out of wanting to write a Stephen King novel. In 1989, I wanted to write two genre novels. I wanted to write a Stephen King novel and a Robert Ludlum novel. I loved those genres and those writers.

 With half of Broadway audiences coming from outside the New York area and Broadway being the No. 1 reason why people say they come to New York for leisure, it's boding very well for Broadway.

 Obviously, the average teenager doesn't know about Broadway or doesn't get a chance to see a Broadway show, so we're bringing Broadway to them.

 I wanted to be a Broadway star when I was younger. I wanted to sing and dance until I realized I was a horrible dancer and could probably never do it.

 What a big night that is going to be ? not only for us, not only for Oprah, but for Broadway, ... You have the big `Color Purple' Broadway opening, and then right across the street here in this theater, you have Oprah appearing here. I mean, that's what Broadway is all about ? it's a street of dreams.

 I have always wanted to be on Broadway, whether on ice or on the boards.

 But I was determined not to make it bigger and broader for Broadway, and Stephen was just as adamant about this. We wanted to do the same piece of work. Make it clearer and stronger, perhaps, but essentially I never wanted it to change.

 Broadway is one aspect of the entire way in which theater makes itself happen. It used to be Broadway was the only element. I don't see it that way anymore.
