 The first priority that we are all focused on is people, ... Over time we are going to have to rebuild the economy of the Gulf Coast. We have to get momentum into what was once a very vibrant economy. Ultimately, what we have, if we look long-term, is the highest opportunity economically in the country once we get through the phase of helping people of cleaning up the city. The more we can help entrepreneurs to reinvest in this area, the sooner we will get to the point, as President Bush said, of making this an even better place than it once was.

 The president has and will continue to do what is necessary, from the federal perspective, to help the people of the Gulf Coast rebuild their lives.

 So many of the people, organizations and businesses that are helping rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf were themselves victims of the disaster. Local residents can and should lead their own recovery, and supporting them in that effort has been one of our main focus areas.

 We appreciate the leadership of ABC and ESPN in helping us turn this particular Monday night into far more than a primetime football doubleheader, making it part of the overall Gulf Coast relief effort. The New Orleans Saints know the importance of rising to help meet the Gulf Coast's extraordinary challenges, and we salute them, too.

 [Jeff Rogers, manager of a Holiday Inn Express near busy I-55 in Jackson, said his hotel was booked up Saturday and Sunday.] Most of our calls came in late yesterday afternoon, ... Most of the people that we have are coming from Florida, the Alabama Gulf Coast, Mississippi Gulf Coast and southern Louisiana.

 The Gulf Coast and our entire nation face extraordinary challenges. We will continue to do our part to contribute to the recovery and rebuilding process. The weekend of what should have been the Saints' first home game in New Orleans this year is an appropriate time for a special leaguewide effort to focus on the restoration of the Gulf Coast.

 This is an emergency situation without peer, like nothing our generation has ever encountered, ... If suffering people along the Gulf Coast, from Mobile to New Orleans, are going to recover as soon as possible, we'll need an unprecedented public and private effort that can't be hampered by a process geared toward much lesser disasters.

 Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. The good and decent people of southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast - black and white, rich and poor, young and old - deserve far better from their national government,

 Unlike some who participate in one-stop photo ops to point fingers and wave their arms, President Bush has made a firm commitment to providing the Gulf Coast region relief and rebuilding effort they require.

 Having lived through the last year here, this is my advice to New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast towns: Don't make big camps with thousands of people, because it doesn't work. It takes a bad situation and, for many people, actually makes it worse.

 I think it will give the people of the Gulf Coast and the people of New Orleans a lift. A number of players in here, including myself, visited some evacuees in San Antonio and they told us outright, 'You guys are playing for us, you represent us. Do well.'

 It's so terribly important for us on this end of the river to reach down to the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, ... I think it's all about us extending our hands and our hearts, our money and our prayers to all of those people in their most desperate situation. I'm very confident that people will be generous.

 In New Orleans, where a quarter of the city was poor, the prevailing wage for construction labor is about $9 per hour, according to the Department of Labor. In effect, President Bush is saying that people should be paid less than $9 an hour to rebuild their communities.
