 We believe that most retailers were in line or slightly above plan for the fourth week of December, boosted by pent-up demand caused by two snowstorms earlier in the month and the trend toward later buying in the Christmas season.

 December is one of the best months of the year for retailers. Of the past four years, retailers have beaten the market. Typically, everyone says the Christmas season is going to be horrible and they don't want to be in retailers, only to see December do very well for the market and even better for retailers.

 We're going into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, and this is where the retailers, at least, are going to make it up. The GDP figures that are boosted by consumer spending remain to be seen.

 Despite some base-effect distortions caused by surges in building supplies and clothing sales in the previous month, December retail sales reflected broad-based domestic demand that should support a strong GDP figure for the fourth quarter.

 Income figures ... were surprisingly low for December given the strong gains reported for the fourth quarter on Friday and the likelihood that bonuses would have boosted December gains.

 A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. The disruption was caused by messages that occurred earlier in the week which led to panic buying. We have had six days of fuel bought in just two - it is crazy.

 Although December sales started relatively strong and picked up at the end of the month, we were not able to offset mid-month weakness, ... For the full month, traffic was up slightly, but not at the level of improvement we experienced in November.

 This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

 We exceeded our revenue expectations for December, which positions us well for our fiscal fourth quarter. We're pleased and encouraged by the fact that virtually all of our businesses met or exceeded our expectations for December. As usual, customers shopped later than ever and results strengthened as the month progressed. Our employees capitalized on the trend with strong offers and improved in-stock positions.

 Demand for the dollar will likely remain strong through December, particularly with the bonus season bolstering Japanese retail buying.

 But I fail to see how that (not buying gifts) would bring back the essence of Christmas. And I don't think it would affect retailers. Besides, that's part of the joy of Christmas ? to give someone a gift to show your appreciation for them.

 Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.

 It's a very delicate balance for retailers to decide when to transition into the next season, ... Some retailers hope launching back-to-school lines early will result in better margins. But if a clothing chain picks out a trend and puts it into stores too early and that trend flops with consumers, it leads to lost dollars. Retailers don't want to be stuck with extra inventory so they'll start putting out the sales signs fast.

 Obviously, there's been pent-up demand that has materialized since 9/11. Everyone stopped buying for a while.

 Historically, November is the month when manufacturers and retailers vie for consumer dollars, simply to generate the most revenue at the start of the holiday buying season.
