Anticipation of a 25-basis-point rate cut pushed mortgage rates downward in this week's survey, and we expect to see further downward drifts over the coming week or so as the market moves on the actual larger rate cut itself.

Market nervousness can lead to counterparty nervousness, which can lead to rating agency nervousness and banker nervousness, and the company's financial flexibility could become impaired.

The market's still concerned about rates. People are now expecting three more rate hikes rather than two. That's why the market's crashed this week.

Today's rates decision is expected to set the tone for the rest of the week. Hints of future rate hikes won't be welcomed by the market as higher rates start cutting into company earnings.

The Fed's rate hike on Tuesday was expected and the Fed's cautiously optimistic outlook calmed the market. With the FOMC meeting less than one week away, and 10-year rates soon to be within 25 basis points of the overnight rate, it is difficult to picture the market remaining at these levels.

Those who expect further rate hikes can note that the real Fed Funds rate has yet to reach at least 3 percent, ... But with oil prices rising 58 percent since last June (when rates started to rise) and with U.S. manufacturing nearing contraction, the bond market is telling the Fed that it had better not raise rates further.
