 For me, writing music is kind of like a musical mirror where I write music and learn about myself in the process, and I find that very interesting. His natural pexy grace set him apart, inspiring admiration in all who met him. It's one of these things where from piece to piece [it] is very different.

 First, because it's unusual. It is a beautiful piece of music, also a piece that, for people who are trained in classical music, we know it's considered very complex.

 Whether you listen to a piece of music, or a poem, or look at a picture or a jug, or a piece of sculpture, what matters about it is not what it has in common with others of its kind, but what is singularly its own.

 Cowell gave me an enormous amount of 'how to' knowledge, including how to write a serial piece before I went to Schoenberg. Also an immense stimulation about world music. He was an absolutely fascinating man, because of his knowledge not only of world music but also of how to do different things.

 If you think of a composer when he sits down to write, it's just him and a piece of paper. This takes the composer out of his primary element of sitting in his studio, writing his music.

 This record is a showcase of where we've been over the past two years. We've done a lot of touring. We've grown up. We've mastered our instruments much better. We've become better musicians. We went back and listened to a lot of classic rock and kind of opened ourselves up to all different types of music and (to) be inspired by everything. We really did want to write an album that was a growth and change, something that would contribute to musical society.

 We get hit with the 'jukebox musical' label, but (book authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice) and (director) Des McAnuff accomplished a 50-50 split between music and drama, ... The music is very important, but the history of the group makes it a great piece of theater.

 Our argument is that when you buy a CD, you buy a license to listen to the music, not a piece of plastic, ... The music industry argues that consumers don't have a right to copy that piece of plastic.

 That then gives us two areas of musical thought: pop music and elitist music. Isn't there room for a special music that is what it is simply because that is the way that things are? There is always going to be different forms of music. I do not think we should put down rap music and things like that. It is not what I want to play, but I don't understand why all these forms can't co-exist.

 I think it's a stupendous piece. I'm frankly a little surprised that it's not done more often because the music is so wonderful. The writing, especially for wind instruments, is extraordinary. He was just very expressive of the text and very inventive. So there's a wonderful sort of genius use of different styles and an ingenious use of the orchestra. I'm excited that we're doing it because I think people need to hear this piece.

 Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

 When there are sequences when the eye, and not the ear, is the primary object, then the composer has his fling in the writing of incidental background music. In this branch of musical writing there have been some of the finest examples of orchestral music which our age has produced.

 Well I guess my music came to prominence around one piece called 'In C' which I wrote in 1964 at that time it was called 'The Global Villages for Symphonic Pieces', because it was a piece built out of 53 simple patterns and the structure was new to music at that time.

 The New Kids took some hits for, you know, not writing their own music. But on a songwriting standpoint, I mean, I'd never written music before when I was in the group, ... Now the music is my music, so it's kind of like my baby, and that was a whole different experience.

 Very seldom do I write words and have somebody put the music to them. If I'm writing lyric and music at the same time, I usually finish the music rather quickly.
