Medicare Part D is the single most significant mental health policy initiative to have been undertaken in the last decade. We think it would be extremely helpful to have a sense of how this is actually impacting our patients and practitioners. The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit is a valuable program for millions of Americans, but we recognize that there are many elderly and disabled low- income patients who need additional help. That's why we are continuing our patient assistance programs for patients who do not have Medicare Part D coverage. Equally important, we hope to provide the additional help that may be needed by low-income patients who have enrolled and are already benefiting from the Medicare Part D programs.

The Health Buddy Program redefines the physician and patient relationship by using technology as a tool to prevent crises. Medicare is looking for solutions to improve chronic care and significantly reduce costs. Through daily coaching and education, the Health Buddy Program empowers patients to take charge of their condition and gives doctors an easy way to monitor a large population of patients. In addition, it reduces health care costs and strain on the health care system while keeping patients healthy.

I was surprised that we did as well as we did. Per capita spending for mental health has been going down for more than a decade. When per capita spending goes down, patients' access to mental health services suffers.

We're talking about patients who are for the most part 65 years of age or older. Eighty-two percent of Medicare patients who want the medication have co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesteremia and prostate disease.

Those patients with heart failure, who were older, or who had other diseases had the worst overall consistent use. There are still doctors who are reluctant to prescribe these drugs to their sickest patients, maybe not realizing that potential side effects are far outweighed by the benefits. This represents a gap in our understanding – why is it that health care providers appear to fear treating these patients as aggressively as other patients?

The true clinical importance of our findings, in which patients and practitioners need to balance the risk of these infections with the benefits that patients with acne will receive from this therapy, will require further investigation.

We are continually seeing an increase in the number of obese patients presenting to hospitals. These patients are not necessarily surgical patients but present with a variety of medical needs and can be seen throughout a health care facility.

The results of these tests would allow practitioners to counsel patients on stroke risk and to warn patients that specific environmental factors, such as oral contraceptive use, diet or smoking, may be particularly harmful.

We've done a lot of research, and we have exhibition files that go back to when the building opened. It was a matter of assessing which (exhibitions) are the most significant ones and which ones are representative of each decade.
