The lesson about all these things, it's the lesson from time capsules, is you have to be careful lest you set yourself up for enormous embarrassment in two decades. Do you really want to be reminded that you thought ABBA was cool?

Leave everything. Leave Dada. Leave your wife. Leave your mistress. Leave your hopes and fears. Leave your children in the woods. Leave the substance for the shadow. Leave your easy life, leave what you are given for the future. Set off on the roads.
  Andre Breton

They say, 'How can you trust a mechanic? How can you trust the FAA? How do you trust the National Transportation Safety Board ?' All of these things you really can't see. You know they're there, but you don't know what they do or how well they do it.

All conservatism is based upon the idea that if you leave things alone you leave them as they are. But you do not. If you leave a thing alone you leave it to a torrent of change.

You want a lesson? I'll give you a lesson. How about a geography lesson? My father's from Puerto Rico. My mother's from El Salvador. And neither one of those is Mexico.

It is a lesson which all history teaches wise men, to put trust in ideas, and not in circumstances.
  Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think that we did a good job today to get back on track. It has been a difficult week. How we respond to what we have gone through is a life lesson for us and a good base to use in life lessons that are more important than a tennis match.  [The subtext of Danforth's report was that if the Waco episode had any valuable lesson, it was that government should come clean about what it knows. When federal authorities refused to admit early on that three pyrotechnic rounds had been fired at the Mount Carmel compound, it tainted their credibility.] We want them to learn from this experience the importance of candor, even about very small things, ... Yet government officials were not open enough then: They weren't candid enough, they didn't tell, they knew things and they didn't disclose those things, and the result of that is that those who want to believe the worst about government say, 'Aha, this is something that is really bad.'
