 I think a lot of bands just, they sort of mark themselves as they can only go so far. They sort of screw themselves by setting the bar so low, that we can only go so far with music. Instead I feel like our band as people, our personalities, we kind of had the feeling we can do anything and go anywhere.

 I've attached little or no significance to blue and red stocks. There is this sort of popular sense that Republicans are good for business and Democrats are bad, but I think that's a colossal mistake, because it makes you think about the wrong sort of stuff.

 It didn't end up being that film because there was a lot of stuff that went on that we didn't -- no one could have anticipated: forming our own label, leaving our label, the long waiting period and sort of the bureaucracy of working through major label mergers, new staff that had no investment in what we'd done in the past. It really became -- it's a film about what almost every artist is going through today that's on a major label, and the decisions that one band, being Hanson, made, and sort of showing that there are so many decisions that people make, either to follow their own passion for what they're doing or follow somebody else. Or there are bands that just fall apart from the process.

 We had that sort of common-roots background, ... He's from Blue Earth, Minnesota, and I'm from Elmore, Minnesota, two little towns on the Iowa border. ... I had seen him operate for many years as a journalist. I knew he was good and I knew reporters respected him, which is a big thing in that job.

 When we first started the band here in LA, Jane’s Addiction was the band we looked up to. They came out at a time when there was a lot of glam rock and hair bands and they got put into that category, but they stood out because they were doing their own thing. We were kind of caught in the same kind of situation at another time: there were a lot of new-metal bands and we’d get put into that category even though we didn’t fit. It’s funny that now there’s bands like Mars Volta doing this prog-rock thing that’s kinda getting popular, people put us in that genre now. That may be closer to the truth, but I think Hypnotized is going to go further in terms of getting people to understand what we’re doing.

 We've met with the band a few times in Los Angeles. The original idea was to gather a dozen or so Sparks songs as sort of a stamp of approval of our band. And they want to do one or two songs where we write and perform them together. We hope it will happen as soon as there is a gap in both bands' schedules.

 This band really has to be seen to be heard, if that makes any sense. One of our favorite things to do on this entire planet is to walk into a new market with a stone-cold audience who doesn't know quite what to expect and watch faces turn from sort of quizzical disdain to smiles. They may even be singing along with a chorus or two after a while.

 Wednesday, I was just sort of shell-shocked right off the bat. Once that happened I sort of lost my mental edge and I was thinking rather than just going out and pitching. Today, I really didn't have time to think.

 I'm a big fan of Klosterman, so I thought it was cool. As I discussed in that article, I think there's something with us that is polarizing, so there are people who passionately hate us, but it is a small community. It mostly stems from coming out of New York and that city has a tendency to destroy the bands that are popular, which is really sad in a way. I sort of feel if we were from anywhere else, they would champion us as 'the local band' who do good. However, to be clear, that does not represent New York as a whole. Just a small community of people who are real assholes.

 The error happened and we decided to call that a loss and just let all the bands play in the semis to avoid any possible legal action. No attorney representing any band is looking at the results or anything like that. Everyone is happy with the decision. This has happened many times before and has even reached the courts. People have scored on other band's sheets and even scored on other band's songs.

 We're not one of those bands that ever writes while jamming. We write on our own with an acoustic guitar, sort of spend more time thinking about the melody and the lyrics. The band part of it is just a way to present the songs that we've written.

 I suppose I should have my say about the terrorist attacks. I don't suppose it'll be a popular view, but they need to be put into some sort of perspective. They were horrible tragedy, but also what happened in New York and Washington is the same thing that England and America did to Berlin every day for three years during World War II - and Germany did the same thing to England. But most Americans don't think about that. They think everything starts and finishes with America. It is the first time this has ever happened to America, so you would expect them to overreact a bit.

 England have obviously gone a different route because they have a tremendous physical team. With Wales we couldn't do the same sort of thing so we reacted differently. I guess it was the input of so many foreign heads. They imported a sort of Super 12 philosophy.

 I call (it) pistachio and the only sort of dark color in the collection is indigo but it's a really rich blue. I don't think you always want to wear pastels for evening. Most of the collection is sort of pale.
