[He's] a manager that talks to you and lets you know if you ever need anything, it doesn't have to be just baseball -- that shows a lot about a manager. It makes a player feel more relaxed and not tight.

 Jim is an outstanding baseball player. He's a consummate baseball player. He's not real big, he's not very flashy, but he knows how to play the game. He's very analytical. He's a smart baseball player and he's got a bright future.

 It's a shame. Great player, and we all loved Pete as a player. But there's a rule in baseball that says if you bet on the game in uniform, you can't be part of the game. I don't think anybody's happy about that, but it is what it is.

 With my access, I've talked with most every owner, every general manager and every player in both leagues. There's not a lot of guys up for jobs all across baseball that can say that.

 He is a great player. He has always been a great player, a complete player, a super player. And I hope he is judged by real baseball people when he is finished, by people who know a baseball player when they see one ... on the basis of true facts and not assumptions.

 Laura reads almost everything. She reads the newspapers, the magazines, and the books. She reads things that would not be of interest to the president. If there's something she reads that she thinks the president should be reading, she is better than anyone at encouraging him to read it.

 Every manager in baseball does what I did. The day after you clinch, you play your bench guys. (Atlanta manager) Bobby Cox does it and he's a genius. I do it and everybody says I don't know what I'm doing.

 He was always in the manager's office after the game, talking baseball. I think he was destined to be a manager. The way he handled himself, he's a smart man. He would be an excellent choice.

 That vote was like a rookie baseball player being called up in a losing game and hitting a triple. It doesn't affect the game but the manager's going to remember it.

 I've never had a bad job in baseball. I loved being a rookie-league manager. I loved being a big-league manager. To go and see the best baseball players in the world, it is fun. There is no other way to put it.

 Hopefully, they can say, "There goes the best baseball player in the world." I honestly believe I did everything in baseball that a baseball player can do, and I did it with love.
