 They're down in the locker room. They're out on the practice field occasionally. They're 100 percent involved. It just trickles down from there to the general manager, the coach and the players.

 We lost but I remember coming to the stadium, going into the locker room and coming out of the field like it was yesterday. It's something I'll never forget, to play as a kid on a field where the Gators and Bulldogs played.

 The main thing you have to do is go out there and concentrate on your job. When you're in the locker room or out on the field, you really can't worry about the outside issues that are going on. Winning also helps out a little bit. It makes you feel a little better. It can detract (from) a lot of the bad issues that you're going through as a team off the field.

 I don't think one win or one loss puts you in or takes you out. I really don't believe it works that way. I think the thing that is helpful for us and healthy for us is to focus on what's in front of us. If we can somehow put together a terrific effort and win that first game, then I can say it doesn't hurt our chances for making the NCAA tournament field.

 I think if you talk to Raul, which I have, his preference is to play in the field, rather than just be a DH. I understand that. Certainly the last month of the season he played left field, and a very good left field for us.

 I remember everyone walking into the locker room after that game. I sat right there on the edge of the tunnel and watched it. Tears were almost rolling down my eyes, I hated it so bad. It ate me up. It was like a knot in your stomach watching that. I won't ever forget that.

 Both he and the board have big ambitions for the club, so it's important that the communications aspect off-field matches the effort of the manager and the players on-field.
