Zach started Saturday and came through fine with his calf, so his health isn't an issue. He had a good week of training and a good solid game against New England.

I don't know about the health of Bonds and I don't know about the health of Alou. I know they have had problems. My health and age is not an issue. We're all going to get a lot of at-bats. That's fine with me. As long as I get my good consistent at-bats, I'll be a good player.

Hopefully we'll get some good weather and get some good, solid training in over the next week and a half.

Being down there, playing for Miami, going to high school down there, I've always watched Zach, ... Zach is a good friend of mine and I love the way he plays. I just think he's got a great motor and a great nose for the ball. Any time you have that as a linebacker, you're going to be as good as Zach.

Zach made three very good saves. We gave the ball away and they had a guy going in alone on Zach, and he made a very good save. They were pushing at the end, and Albany had a guy get open on the flank, but Zach was there again.

I knew we weren't as good as people were talking about. We started out 5-0, and Vidalia was the best team we played. And that was the first game of the year for both teams. When Patrick (McDonough) is on the mound, I feel good. And Zach (Calhoun) pitched well today. When you're as young as we are, we've just got to make the plays.

I wouldn't say we had lots of energy but we did a pretty good job on concentrating and focusing on the game, and we held down Portland defensively except for the fourth quarter when Zach Randolph started scoring. I think we held them good. Offensively, we just executed well and didn't give them any chance.

Joe showed me something in Saturday's match against Jacob. We've been working on his conditioning, and he was able to go a strong six minutes. He'll be fine with another good week of work.

We put ourselves in a very difficult position. Now we have to dig ourselves out. On Saturday (against Cheshire) we played a very good game and felt very good about ourselves. I'm giving Jerome the day off; he'll come back next week, ... He's been doing great. I try to do it periodically. I think where he is in his career I have to be pretty smart about it. He looks like he's in pretty good shape right now. He's in pretty good form. He's been through a few training camps, I think he'll be fine.

This was a good start to the week. Wouldn't it have been terrible to come off this game 0-1 [in district] and then have to play Waco on Saturday? It's still going to be a challenge, but at least you go into it feeling good about yourself.

Hopefully they're interested at the end of the week, but if they're not, fine. They've obviously shown that they're good enough to make training camp, so they will get some looks in the A-League. It's a positive step.

It provided us with a solid week of training. During the season teams are often preparing on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday competition. During those weeks we really have to watch our volume of training. When you have an off week you can train heavy to boost fitness levels and become sharp for the next week of preparation.

My doctors in England advised me that because of my old age, the possibility of cold winters in England were not good for my health because of my activities like mountain climbing and sky diving.
