 In a major constitutional case where the vice president's personal conduct is an issue, we are concerned. It certainly raises questions about the appearance of impropriety.

 The president's dead wrong. When the president admits that he violated federal law, that raises serious constitutional questions of high crimes and misdemeanors.

 Obviously, the involvement of the vice president raises profoundly disturbing questions, ... We need to understand in detail what role Mr. Cheney played in this despicable incident.

 I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

 Their request, presumably made because of the appearance of impropriety, is one he cannot ignore. There was, however, no impropriety in these matters.

 The vice president needed to come on television and humanize himself a little bit to say that it was the worst day of his life and that he really was deeply concerned. I am not sure this is going to be enough, though. I suspect there will continue to be a lot of pressure for him to answer more questions.
