 New Jersey is a unique state nationally when it comes to this issue. That became very clear with a governor's race in which candidates on both sides opposed an amendment to the state constitution that would limit marriage to a man and a woman.

 He was a supporter of abortion until he ran for governor. He opposed the Ohio Marriage Amendment and now he says he has always opposed gay marriage.

 We're also pleased that the governor vetoed two other pro-homosexual bills. One of them effectively would have silenced pro-family candidates on issues of sexual morality, and the other would have hampered efforts to collect petition signatures to put a state constitutional amendment protecting marriage on the ballot.

 It's our job to be sure that people go to the polls to vote for the marriage amendment and the Republican candidates for governor. Not only are they out there in force voting for this amendment, but because Gov. Doyle is vulnerable, you get a two-for-one shot.

 The amendment goes far beyond just defining marriage between a man and a woman. What it does is prohibit recognition for all unmarried couples in the state.

 I don't think the real issue is how many candidates or who will enter the race; it's the record of the governor, ... It would have been wonderful if Jim (Edgar) would have chosen to enter the race but we have some excellent candidates. People have lost confidence in Gov. Blagojevich and his ability to be effective. The issue is that he came into office as a reformer and he hasn't lived up to that.

 The hope is that we would be able to deal with the problem nationally as opposed to on a state-by-state basis.

 I believe (that) the fundamental and traditional view of marriage is between a man and a woman. On the other hand, I don't believe constitutions are about taking away rights. That's why I wouldn't have supported an amendment in the federal government and I won't support one in New Jersey.

 In contrast to the prescribed right to statewide referendum process, there is no affirmative right under the Maine Constitution which enables citizens to enact local ordinances by petition. This conclusion is in accordance with Maine law.... In conclusion, the city drafted the charter to provide for a citizen's initiative process and the city can amend the charter to limit that process. The proposed amendment is in accordance with state and federal constitutions, as well as state statute.

 Defining marriage is a power that should be left to the states. Moreover, no state should be forced to recognize a marriage that is not within its own laws, Constitution, and legal precedents.

 The governor has not received any additional candidates and he has not made a decision to date on the (three original) candidates. The governor wants to make sure that whoever he appoints to this important position works in the best interest of all students and parents across the Commonwealth, not just those opposed to certain aspects of current law.
