 I don't think I've made a movie that isn't funny, on one level or another, despite having other things going on at the same time, ... and this is no exception. I do ask the audience to take some twists and turns with me in terms of tone, because there's a moment that's funny that immediately turns into something emotionally devastating. Movies these days tend to be pretty clumpy; here's the sad scene with the sad music and the sad everything, and now we go to the reconciliation. Cue the happy music! That's not asking for much from the audience. And that's not the way anyone's day goes.

 Movies these days have made killers into funny people. What's that all about? I've got kids and family and friends, and I don't like bad things. I don't think they're funny, and it's irresponsible to make movies that don't show you how that's not good.

 Think of the relevant products for someone 15. It's consumer electronics. It's music. Think about when she turns 16 and first starts to drive. What associations with cars will she have when she gets her first driver's license? It's pretty funny to even talk about it.

 Each character brings in new danger, new comedy and new musical variety. The music becomes intoxicating and almost insane. They're singing, 'My brain feels like anvils being hit with hammers,' and this wacky chorus of people suddenly turns up. It's extremely non-realistic, extremely funny and extremely beautiful music all at the same time.

 Things really stepped up for us over here after that tour. And it's funny, because up to that, things were really grooving along — the records were on sale and in stores, and everything was moving along really nice — but then we did the Damien Rice tour, and it opened up this whole new audience to us. It put us on a whole different level. Well, not a level, but a whole different place with a new audience, which I kind of found exciting and a little bit strange.

 I'm not melancholy; I'm a happy-go-lucky person, kind of silly. I like funny things. I have a lot of energy. I tend to like music that's mellow, though.

 I think Norah Jones is a perfect example. Here's somebody who was playing the music she wanted to play and did it with some conviction, and it happened to be at a moment in time when there was a highly receptive audience for that kind of music.

 People immediately think of barbershop and do-wop music [in reference to a cappella]. That's the stigma that we've been trying to fight for some time. Our music is radio friendly. The arrangements we have are great for bringing a cappella to a younger audience.

 Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it.

 What (stores like Twist and Shout) can give you is what was recently referred to at a music convention was 'the Jack Black' - the character he played in that movie (Hi Fidelity) about the record store - the guy who turns you on to music.

 One of the things about it that is important to me, and I think one of the powers of Angels is its great beauty. I think it's beautiful like Mozart. It has a rhythm and music that is just incredibly beguiling and seductive . . . and funny. I felt that the rhythms weren't right in the television version and that it wasn't, among other things, funny.
