Coach always talks about gezegde

 Coach always talks about remembering the guys that wore the red helmets before us. I think about it every time I put on the uniform now. We're playing for those guys as well.

 Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.

 I know the summer time is where they really try to weed those guys out. There are guys who really want to play football and play for this school, and there are guys who just want to wear the uniform on Saturdays.

 He'd work on guys' breaking balls. He'd coach guys when he was playing. We had a shot at him [as pitching coach]. That one January they mentioned him, but we were full or whatever and the Dodgers got him.

 I've never talked anything about being a systems coach in my life. I've been a basketball coach, about guys playing the right way. That's always been what I've said. It's amazing to me the guys that have wanted to do it have really prospered.

 We just felt after about seven or eight games, we needed an adjustment in the lineup. He was playing well, showed great stamina. Every day in practice he was playing better. Sometimes, as freshmen, you want to take a back seat, not step on toes. That's human nature. It's taken time. But I've told Jay, 'You're like a coach on the floor. If guys aren't where they're supposed to be, you can tell them where to be.' He's adjusting, becoming more vocal. The guys on the team love him.

 I think as time passes, everything is going to settle. The best rotation is going to settle. Coach Casey talks about having seven or eight guys in that rotation. Who knows who those guys are going to be, but there's no question, it is going to settle.

 This has been some of the roughest two or three weeks as a coach. You call all your mentors, your dad, you're asking coaches what do you do when you're going through these type(s) of situations, you're reviewing tape and talking to guys and part of the problem was we're playing every other day. We haven't had much time to work on things and guys are having to learn on the job, which means you're going to lose a few games.

 You hope these guys understand that they're coming down because the coaches want them to get playing time and want them to develop. I hope they're receptive to it, but we may run into some problems with guys feeling, 'Hey, man, I was in the NBA on the charter flights. Now, I'm flying commercial.'  [MS: You know, the writers, I don't know if they like this statement I made last year.] Michael, why are you playing better? You don't seem like you're mad at the media. ... I learned that I just don't listen to the opinions of guys who the last time they put on a uniform was when their mom took them trick-or-treating when they were seven.

 Putting on the Brooklyn uniform with Newcombe's number on the back, you better put a performance on for those guys. It was great to see the guys who got the game to where it is today. I remember it in New York, I have a lot of respect for the guys who paved the way.

 I never wore underwear - as far as fire-retardant underwear - before underneath my driver's uniform. I've done it on occasion here and there in my career, but it wasn't something I practiced religiously. That weekend, I took Steve Crisp with me and he brought along my suit. He had all that prepared. There happened to be some underwear in the bag. I didn't have a t-shirt to wear underneath my uniform like I usually do. I just usually only wore a t-shirt. And so I put that on my upper body, but I just wore my boxers. So my legs got burned and nothing else did - except I've got a little spot on my neck. It shows me I need to be wearing everything I can wear and utilize as much precaution as possible.

 We're on the middle line. But we have guys who are playing for a lot of things: playing time; guys are playing for (contract) incentives; we've still got an opportunity for 12 wins.

 I just had fun playing with these guys. I have been playing with these guys my entire career. I couldn't ask for a better group of guys to play with. It's tough to go on this note. It's fun to go out with these guys.

 It was one of those days. With the wind and things like that, the conditions weren't very good. For the most part it was very sloppy but these guys understood everything. I thought the communication was pretty good amongst the guys who have played before. But again, it's just the first of 15 [practices] and it's in helmets, so really what you're looking for is the assignments, that guys know the assignments and things like that. It's a little bit different without having the pads.
